Chapter 26: Convincing My False Mate Part 1

"What did you say?" Darius turns to me, and I find the words a knot in my throat, sticking there and refusing to move an inch.

I gulp hard, then I force it out.

"I'm, sorry, alpha." I say, spitting the words out as fast as I can.

After which, I feel his gaze still upon me.

The beating of my heart is relentless.

"You're asking for my forgiveness?" He asks, with a neutral voice.

I nod, the only response I think to give.

"What I did was wrong," I say, caressing the totem in my pocket. Wondering if it is working, or just that I haven't told a lie yet. "I betrayed you, and, and I'm sorry." Again, I know this much, but I still wonder, above the beating of my heart, if the totem is working.

Of course it will work, my mate would never put me in harm's way.

This is foolproof, it has to be.

I jump when I hear footsteps echo into the hall, and at the corner of my eyes, I can see the maids coming in with trays and more trays.
