CHAPTER 1

A Birthday Surprise in the Dark

"Shut up! We're not kids anymore—don't start those old horror stories again!" Kei groaned, rolling his eyes at his friend Rina.

"Oh, come on, Kei! You're not interested in ghost stories, or are you still scared of them?" she teased, grinning.

"I'm not scared," Kei huffed.

"Yeah, sure," Yoshi chimed in, crossing his arms. "Every time we talk about ghosts, you just try to change the subject."

"I do not!" Kei protested.

Kerin smirked. "Alright, then prove it."

Kei scoffed. "I'm not stupid enough to fall for your ridiculous challenges."

"Fine, fine," Kerin said, raising his hands in surrender. "No arguments tonight."

"Anyway, it's getting cold," Yoshi said, pulling his hoodie tighter. "Let's get inside."

With that, they retreated into their tents for the night—Kei and Yoshi sharing one, while Kerin and Rina took the other.

Kei's POV

A cold breeze brushed against my face as I opened my eyes.

And there it was—a ghost.

"AHHH!" I screamed, only to curse myself when I realized it was just a dream.

Shaking off the eerie feeling, I turned over.

Yoshi?

He was gone.

A strange sound broke the silence outside. My heart pounded as I crawled out of the tent, scanning the dark surroundings. No sign of him.

A chill ran down my spine. Something felt off.

I rushed over to Kerin and Rina's tent—empty.

Panic set in. "Kerin? Yoshi? Rina? Where are you?" My voice echoed into the night.

A rustling noise came from behind me.

I turned around slowly, my breath hitching. "K-Kerin? Is that y-you?" My voice wavered.

I swallowed hard and walked toward the sound. Nothing. Just the wind rustling through the trees.

I exhaled in relief, but as I turned back—

"AHH!"

I stumbled back, landing hard on the cold ground.

Suddenly, laughter erupted.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU… HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU… HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR KEI… HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!"

I stared in disbelief as my three idiot best friends stood there, grinning, holding a small cake with flickering candles.

"You guys scared the hell out of me!" I gasped, clutching my chest.

"That's the point," Kerin smirked.

"Be a little brave, babe," Rina teased, winking.

"Oh, shut up, monkey," I shot back, making her laugh harder.

"Enough bickering," Yoshi cut in. "Let's eat cake already!"

I sighed, shaking my head, but smiled as I stepped forward to blow out the candles.

"Wait!" Kerin stopped me. "Make a wish first."

I closed my eyes, pressing my hands together.

I love this time with my friends. Let us stay together forever.

And with that, I blew out the candles.
