Chapter 407: For the Sake of Art

With the script in place, the preparation for "300 Spartans" began to speed up. David Ellison's $80 million production budget was fully secured, and under the control of Bearded Jack and Zack Snyder, the crew operated at high efficiency. From the actors provided by Angel Agency, the cast for the Spartan warriors and Persian soldiers was quickly finalized.

Matthew had previously spoken to Helen Herman, Zack Snyder, and Bearded Jack, ensuring that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender smoothly landed two important supporting roles.

As close friends, Matthew naturally wanted to help them when he could, though both had initially aimed for independent development. However, McAvoy and Fassbender couldn't cheat like Matthew, and luck hadn't favored them as much. Despite being in the industry for years, they were barely small-time stars, still far from truly becoming famous.

Matthew had an in-depth talk with them, and though he couldn't help them much, giving them a boost when appropriate wasn't hard. This time, McAvoy and Fassbender accepted his goodwill and joined the "300 Spartans" crew.

Aside from the two of them, all other actors in the crew were clients of Angel Agency. Helen Herman recommended Eva Green for the role of the Spartan Queen, and neither Matthew nor Zack Snyder opposed it. After an internal audition, Green easily secured the role.

For this shoot, Angel Agency's clients were extensively involved, not just actors but also many behind-the-scenes staff like lighting technicians, set designers, and prop masters.

To a large extent, Helen Herman provided the crew with a one-stop service package. Similar to CAA's bundled projects, she would also take a cut from the profits, though the percentage was quite low.

Matthew's presence gave Helen Herman the confidence to offer such a service, and she ensured that everyone she recommended was highly competent. This being her first time providing such a package, the success of this venture was crucial for future operations.

In Hollywood, having talent doesn't guarantee success; there are plenty of skilled individuals without opportunities.

According to Zack Snyder's plan, the film would have no location shots; all filming would be done in Warner Studios' sound stages. He also mandated a three-month intensive fitness training from early February for all actors, including Matthew, to ensure every Spartan warrior had a physique akin to a bodybuilding champion.

Actors who didn't fit the muscular mold wouldn't even pass Helen Herman's recommendation list. Effeminate Spartans would turn the film into a satirical comedy rather than an epic action movie.

To match the required musculature, Snyder had the costume designer create semi-nude Spartan uniforms. The warriors, led by Matthew, would proudly display their sculpted bodies and robust muscles on screen.

Historical records Matthew had read depicted Spartan warriors fighting in heavy armor, some weighing as much as half their body weight. Snyder felt that such costumes would make the noble Spartans look like a turtle army, so he redesigned the costumes based on the original graphic novel's aesthetics. King Leonidas and his men would wear crimson capes, half-naked, showcasing their chiseled physiques.

These costumes resembled leather Speedo swimsuits.

"These designs aren't just for visual impact," Snyder explained in Warner Studios' office.

Matthew, sitting on a sofa reviewing the designs, nodded. "The visual impact alone is stunning."

Snyder smiled. "You know, Matthew, you're the person who most appreciates my vision."

Matthew looked up seriously. "Because what you envision and what you've shown in the test footage are truly unique and unforgettable."

Hearing this, Snyder felt a sense of camaraderie. Coming from an advertising and music video directing background, his commercial approach often faced disdain. But meeting Matthew and receiving his support was a stroke of luck.

Bringing the conversation back, Snyder said, "Men love sexy female bodies; women are equally drawn to masculine physiques. My insistence on fitness and special costume design is also to attract female viewers."

Matthew nodded. "You've thought this through, Zack."

Snyder continued, "This type of film rarely appeals to women, who are a significant part of the movie market. If our design works, it should attract a female audience."

He added with a chuckle, "For the sake of art, I've stripped the warriors."

Matthew laughed. "Exactly, Zack, it's all for the sake of art!"

Snyder joined in the laughter, then sincerely said, "Matthew, your physique is already perfect, but I suggest you join the pre-shoot fitness and training. It will enhance your physique and allow you to help guide other actors in swordsmanship training." He earnestly invited, "I need you to be part of the action design. I lack experience in this area."

Matthew considered it seriously for a moment. "Sure."

He hadn't worked with this action director before and hadn't heard of him, though recommended by Helen Herman. Participating personally in the action design would also allow him to leverage his strengths.

Having filmed several action movies, Matthew had developed insights, particularly about what actions suited him best and which designs showcased him effectively.

"Zack, have you thought about the action sequences?" Matthew asked directly.

"Not much, but definitely not the dance-like or acrobatic moves popular in Hollywood recently," Snyder had clearly thought it through. "The actions should be fierce and emphasize power."

Matthew closed the design sketches. "I agree."

Having seen the film before, Matthew easily aligned with Snyder's vision.

After discussing with Snyder for most of the afternoon, Matthew left the director's office, preparing to leave Warner Studios. As he exited the office building adjacent to the sound stages, he coincidentally saw Eva Green coming out of a sound stage.

The French actress, dressed in a black fitted casual outfit, seemed very fond of black clothing.

"Hi, Eva," Matthew waved towards the sound stage entrance.

Green quickened her pace upon seeing him, her downturned mouth curling into a smile. "What a coincidence, Matthew."

"Yeah, a coincidence," Matthew echoed, then asked, "Are you heading out?"

Green nodded slightly. "Yes, I came to get measured for my costume. Now it's done."

Matthew suggested, "I'm about to leave too. Shall we go together?"

Green nodded in agreement. "Sure."

Since the gate wasn't far, they didn't bother with a cart, choosing to walk instead.

"We just finished shooting 'Pirates of the Caribbean'," Matthew said as they walked. "Didn't expect to be working together again so soon."

Green seemed in a good mood. "You're the king; I'm the queen." She glanced at the studio gate ahead, then suddenly changed the topic. "I owe you another favor."

Matthew shook his head. "You don't owe me anything." He paused, choosing his words carefully. "I merely mentioned you to Gore Verbinski for the role of the witch in 'Pirates of the Caribbean.' For this queen role, everyone who saw your audition praised you, and I just agreed with Zack Snyder. Helen Herman recommended you to the crew."

Green looked at him, realizing Matthew wasn't just being polite.

After their long talk, Matthew knew this actress, who easily stripped on screen, was quite guarded in reality.

So, he adjusted his approach to appear more sincere.

"Eva, if you need to thank someone, it should be Helen Herman first and foremost," Matthew said truthfully.

"You're right," Green agreed completely, adding, "I'll prepare a special thank-you gift for Helen."

Matthew feigned curiosity. "Can you give me a hint?"

Green shook her head. "Of course not. I want it to be a surprise for Helen."

They continued chatting as they neared Warner Studios' gate. Just before they reached the entrance, Matthew's phone rang. He glanced at it; it was Helen Herman.

"Excuse me, I need to take this call," Matthew stopped and answered, "Helen, you're saying Akiva Goldsman's project is confirmed? The script outline is with you? Got it, I'll come over right away."
