I watched as my father paced slowly, intimidating his men who were lined up in front of him. No one dared to meet his eyes.
"Bring him out!" My father commanded.
A man who could be barely recognized as a human being was dragged out and pushed to the ground. He looked like he had been beaten up for days. One of his eyes had even been taken out. From where I stood, he had not more than three fingers on his right hand and two on his left. I wanted to vomit.
I had no idea why my father wanted me around. I had been training, but I was never really involved in the Mafia. After all, I was just nine years old.
"Do you know why you're here tu hombre estúpido?" Father asked. The man bowed his head lowly. I wasn't even sure he could lift his neck. He remained silent. My father kicked him in his face. Blood spewed out of his mouth to the floor. This was terrifying to me.
"What is omertà?" My father asked turning to me.
"The oath of silence." I had already been thought this during my training.
"What happens if you break it?" He asked me again.
"Death!" I muttered.
"Louder!" He yelled. Frightened, I said my answer louder.
He pulled out his gun and aimed it at the dying man. He motioned for me to come closer. I was shaking so much that I could barely breathe.
"Please spare me." The man whispered. I have four kids. My wife died 2 years ago."
"I already know your sob story estúpido."
"I want you to kill him." My father said to me. I was full blown crying at this point.
"Wipe those shitty tears before I wipe them with my hand." At this, I quickly wiped my tears, but I was still shaking. My father handed me the gun.
"Do it! Is the gun not loaded?" Before I could reply, he took the gun from my hand and shot one of his men dead.
"Now kill him!" He handed the gun to me. I was very good at target practice, but I never wanted to actually take someone's life.
My hands were shaking like crazy as I pointed the gun at the man. The tears came back in full force this time.
"It's either him or you." My father told me, and I knew what I had to do.
The man looked up at me remorsefully.
"I did it for my kids." He whispered and immediately, I shot him in his chest.
"Next time don't waste my time perra!" He was about to hit me, but I immediately started trembling. I could barely breathe, and I was so dizzy that I had to sit on the floor with my hands in my head. I didn't know what was wrong with me. I felt like I was going crazy. My heart was beating so fast that I couldn't control it. More tears rushed down my face.
One of the maids rushed to help me after my father walked out. She helped calm me down and explained what was happening to me. I had my first panic attack! I had nightmares for years after that.
...
"Get up!" Kimberly yelled as she kicked my door open. "You've been laying down all day daydreaming."
"I was just lost in thought. Now get out!" I rolled my eyes.
"But I'm bored." She whined.
"Since when do I care?"
"Great! Let's go out." She said ignoring my lack of enthusiasm.
"No!" I deadpanned.
"Please?"
"No."
"Well too late. Our friends already texted that they'll meet us there in thirty minutes."
"They're your friends, not mine."
"But I want you to come along. You'll have fun."
"I don't want to have fun."
"Alright then, I guess I'll have to buy someone else snickers." She said walking towards the door. I instantly sat up.
"Did you say snickers?" I was a sucker for snickers and she knew it.
"I thought you didn't want to come along." She smirked evilly.
"Bitch!" I muttered lowly.
"What was that?"
"Nothing!"
"You'll have to change that." She gestured to my shirt and shorts.
"Where are we going?"
"Nightclub." Ugh! I didn't really like nightclubs!
She made me dress up in a red plunge cut out bodycon minidress and did my hair and makeup. She left to get dressed and was back in less than fifteen minutes to drag me outside before I fell asleep.
We met her annoying friends, Shirley and Samantha sitting at a table, waiting for us. They did their weird greeting and hugging before we finally sat down. I zoned out during their cheesy conversation, reminding myself that I was doing this for the snickers I wasn't allowed to buy myself. My father never let me have them, but Kimberly was always there to sneak me some.
"Luna!" I heard my name bringing me back to their conversation.
"What!" I was partially distracted by a waitress placing beer bottles on the table.
"You in for a game of truth or dare?" Shirley asked.
"No!" I snapped.
"Snickers!" Kimberly coughed out.
"I'll play the fucking game." I mumbled and waited for my turn. I didn't even know I was already in my second bottle. Luckily, I have a high alcohol tolerance, so I wasn't drunk.
"Luna, truth or dare?" Sam smirked.
"Dare!"
"You see that guy over there?" She gestured to some dude sitting alone, who looked like he was scrolling on his phone. "I dare you to take a sip from his drink."
It was as if that bitch knew I would pick dare. I walked over to the table where the guy sat. Noticing the presence of someone, he raised his head. I paused for a few seconds. He was fucking handsome! He actually had me mesmerized. He had jet black hair and deep brown eyes. A small stubble sat perfectly on his well chiseled jaw. He wore an earring on his right ear. He was hot af! After spacing out for like four seconds, I picked up his drink and took a sip while staring into his eyes. It was whiskey. The guy remained silent as he watched me. I broke eye contact and walked back to my seat, having completed the dare.
After the annoying hangout with Kimberly's friends, I finally got six snicker bars and was back home. I was glad Kim and her friends didn't see the guy's face as he had his back to us. I was about walking towards the stairs after Kim to the comfort of my room when I was stopped by my father in the sitting room.
"Luna! I want you to infiltrate the Italian Mafia."
"What the fuck?"
