Based on his observations from the previous day, Zhang Cheng realized that there were more thugs than he had imagined. There were 13 thugs with guns and 21 others armed with iron rods, swinging sticks, and machetes. Besides them, there were six scantily clad women.
Zhang Cheng didn't know that just before the apocalypse broke out, a crackdown on vice had occurred, resulting in some clients and prostitutes being taken into the police station.
Their routine wasn't exactly set in stone. The thugs did clean up the zombies regularly, coming out to check every two hours to ensure the iron gate was secure. Food searches always took place around noon, and it was always those not armed with guns who were assigned to this task.
During the night, guards were set up, all of whom were unarmed. Those with guns seemed to enjoy a "privilege". They took part in regular zombie clean ups but never stood guard.
Zhang Cheng pondered whether he should wait or take action immediately. After some thought, he decided to hold off on taking immediate action, as the opponents being greater in number meant a direct confrontation would likely run down his ammo.
The next day, the thugs repeated their process from the previous day, swiftly opening the iron gate and clearing out the zombies in the alley to create a path for the vehicles.
Zhang Cheng had placed himself on the third floor of a bar outside the street from where he was observing their routes. In case of any sudden incidents, such as a large group of zombies blocking the road, the thugs would instantly reverse back.
Their focus remained on the food supply stores. As these items were visible and the easiest to carry, they wasted little time on the streets. Zhang Cheng grew puzzled as to why they didn't dare to take alcohol despite being afraid of getting beaten.
With a sudden idea, Zhang Cheng decided to set a trap for the thugs. During the night, he took all the liquor from a few convenience stores and piled them up at the doorway of one of the food supply stores. The thugs were bound to pass this shop as per their usual routes.
Sure enough, on the third day, the thugs continued their drill, quickly opening their gate and clearing the zombies to let their vehicles pass through. The first were playing distraction roles with their car horns, and the second vehicle left the alley a bit later.
Once they arrived at the food supply store with the liquor piled up in front, they quickly alighted from the vehicle. They remembered not seeing so much liquor the previous day. Ignoring the peculiar change, they quickly loaded up the liquor in hopes of avoiding another beating by their leader.
