Katie rests her hand on the cold and hardened bark of a pine tree on the trail to catch her breath. Her brother Jake has been walking in long strides ahead of the group.
“W, wait a minute,” says Katie through her open mouth letting the words float in the frozen mist of the air.
Jessica stands next to her to catch her breath. She leans her foot against the tree’s trunk but her foot slides down with the weight of her body. Jessica leans in against Katie for support. Jake glares at the two of them beyond Raul and Roy who are in the middle. Why is he in such a bad mood?
“We need to hurry and find the lookout station,” says Jake, throwing his hands in the direction of the path ahead. Katie looks down at the floor at the tree, she notices a single flower holding on for dear life. Its delicate steam is full of frost all along the length of its petals. The thin pink folds enveloped in icicles look to Katie like they could snap off at any moment.
