While kissing her, Ethan Montgomery chuckled, "Is my voice also one of your burps?" 

Avery Miller elbowed him hard backwards, causing the man with a one-track mind behind her to let out a low grunt, which Avery quickly muffled with the phone's receiver.

Finally, the man behind her quieted down for a moment, and Avery pressed the phone back to her ear. 

This time, it was Jessica Wilson's turn to be vocally explosive, her sudden shout once again sending a pang through Avery's eardrum. "Hey, Avery, are you okay?" 

Avery laughed awkwardly, "Ha-ha, I'm fine, really, don't worry about me." 

Avery's own words made her feel guilty. Elijah Martinez was probably still in the hospital, injured because of her, and she didn't even know if he was out of danger yet, while she was here, safe and sound.
