"Could it be that Ethan Montgomery has found us but chosen not to show himself?"

Derek Mason pondered for a moment before nodding seriously, "It's very possible."

"But if he has found us, knowing his personality, how could he possibly restrain himself from appearing? It doesn't make sense!" Avery Miller scratched her head in frustration, unable to figure it out.

"Oh?" Derek said teasingly, "Knowing his personality? You seem to know him quite well, don't you?"

Avery didn't think much of his comment, taking it as another jest, and turned her head away to continue pondering, ignoring him.

Derek supported his chin with one hand, gently massaging it as he slowly revealed the thoughts troubling her heart, "Maybe... he's doing it to protect you?"

This response caught her off guard. She paused, stunned, and then chuckled softly, "Ha, Derek, are you serious?"
