Adolf stands up, walks toward her window, and opens the curtains. "I am proud to say, Frau Schmidt, that I am fluent in the language, so I will not have any more trouble in communication. Thank you." He then exits the room and closes the door, heading outside to the cemetery.
He is there watching the body being lowered into the ground. His mind wanders to the day's events and their significance. He ponders the many lessons he learned during his time with her and how they have shaped him into the person he is today. He feels a surge of gratitude toward her and a renewed determination to fulfill his promise.
The funeral ends, and Adolf goes home and prepares for his journey ahead. As he packs, he reflects on the past year and the impact it has had on him. He thinks of all the lessons he learned and the memories they evoke. He feels a deep sense of gratitude toward Frau Schmidt and a renewed determination to fulfill his promise. With a renewed sense of purpose, Adolf prepares to embark on a new chapter of his life.
He sets out to find a way to make a living in this struggling German economy. The best job he could find is a simple newspaper delivery boy. The pay is shit, but it's better than nothing. It's the only job he could get in this shitty economy.Every day he wakes up early, grabs the newspapers, and delivers them.
But one day he decides to try his luck at at getting a better job but then he finds out about paramilitary groups like the Freikorps. A group of soldiers who could not return to normal life after the great war, they have become violent vigilantes and a law unto themselves. They are the only ones who have an actual source of income. As they are under government supply and pay
Adolf approaches the group's leader. "Sir, I want to join your ranks. I wish to bring order and stability back to our nation."
The leader of the paramilitary group turns his gaze toward Adolf, sizing him up.
"You look pretty scrawny. I don't think you're cut out for this. Go home, kid. Find a job."
Adolf is unrelenting. "Please, sir, let me prove myself. I have some military experience." His heart runs fast knowing for a fact that's a complete lie
The leader rolls his eyes. "Fine, you can try, but if you can't cut it, you're out. I can't have a liability in my ranks."
Adolf thanks him, and the leader leads him to the group's training ground. He is handed a rifle and told to shoot a target.
"Let's see what you've got."
Adolf raises the rifle and sees it is a Gewehr '98. He loads the gun with a single bullet and aims carefully, taking a deep breath before pulling the trigger.
They realize he has no experience with a weapon as he misses the target. "What the hell, kid! You said you had some military experience! What was that, a potato masher?"
"No, I'm just bad at shooting guns." He starts to sweat a bit as he lies, fearing that they would throw him out.
"Whatever, we'll start with a bayonet. Get in line."
Adolf follows orders and joins the other men.
They practice stabbing dummies, and after a while, the leader declares the session finished.
As the group disperses, the leader approaches Adolf.
"Not bad, kid. You've got potential."
Adolf is relieved. "Thank you, sir. I'll do my best."
The leader slaps him on the back. "Keep up the good work, and you'll go far."
With that, Adolf was accepted into the
Freikorps.
A year after he was accepted into the Freikorps, Adolf is doing his duties.
Then as he is doing his duties he is called up by the leader to join him on a mission.
"What is the mission?"
"We are going to kill some communists."
He is disgusted by the idea of killing innocent people. But he knows he has no other choice but to obey orders no matter what.
"Yes, sir."
As the group approaches the city, the leader stops them. Adolf stares at Munich, most of the city still in rumble after the great war.
"Sir. We are killing communists but who exactly"
"The Bavarian Soviet Republic as they call themselves"
Adolf is shocked at this revelation. "They
are not even German!"
"They are Bolsheviks and thus enemies of the German people. Now shut up and follow my orders."
"Yes, sir."
Adolf takes a deep breath and loads his gun. As he follows his commander, he wonders if this is what war really is - not fighting for a noble cause but simply obeying orders.
As the group approaches the center of town, they spot a crowd of people gathered around a makeshift stage.
"What's going on?"
The leader spits in disgust. "Looks like the communists are having a rally."
Now is our chance. We'll strike them while they're distracted."
Adolf is hesitant, but he has no choice.
As the group approaches the stage, the leader shouts, "For Germany!" and the men charge.
Chaos ensues as the crowd scatters, and the group opens fire on the stage. Adolf tries to shoot a man in a suit, but he misses. His entire body shaking at the thought of killing a man. But he has no other choice otherwise he will be seen as a traitor. He takes a deep breath and shoots at the man again before he can get too far. Runs up to the man and stabs him in the chest to ensure he is dead.
Then he realizes the man has a star of David necklace. "Fuck, he was a jew."
The leader approaches Adolf, a smirk on his face.
"Not bad, kid. Not bad at all."
Adolf looks at the man's corpse.
"Wasn't this just a rally? Why were there so many people here?"
"Because it was a revolution, you idiot."
The leader laughs and walks away.
Adolf stares at the corpse, unable to comprehend the events that just transpired. He feels a deep sense of guilt, even though he knows that he did what was necessary.
Suddenly, a hand touches his shoulder. He looks up and sees a young woman standing beside him. She has beautiful dark eyes and brown hair.
"Are you alright?"
Adolf is surprised by the question. "I...I'm fine. Who are you?"
"My name is Magda."
She extends her hand. Adolf shakes it, not sure what to make of the situation. He sees she is a medic.
"Are you here to help the wounded?"
"Yes, I am. But I want to know if you're alright."
"I'm fine. Just a little shaken up."
Magda nods, a sympathetic expression on her face.
"I'm sorry. I know this is a lot to take in."
"It's fine. I'm just glad it's over."
Magda gives him a small smile. "You did well."
He loads his gun and walks off and so his day goes on killing unarmed communists just because he was ordered to.
As the day comes to an end, Adolf is exhausted.
He walks over to the campfire and sits down. He stares into the flames, his thoughts consumed by the events of the day. Then he lifts up his head staring up into the sky
"Is this the reality of war.. Now I truly realize what war means.."
