Origin Part Two

Two months before the expected due date for the birth of their child, Vivian Griffin confided in her husband, Bernard Griffin that, apart from the usual kicks from the baby, she had been feeling something else, something that was hard to explain. Out of fear for his wife and child's safety, he rushed her to his doctor-friend at the general hospital.

The doctor, Dr. Daniel Hathaway, a secret contact of Dr. Michelson, expecting the couple, dismissed all the nurses as he prepped the ultrasound. "Okay, let's see here", Dr. Hathaway said as he scanned the fetus displaying it on the screen. Apart from the usual head, legs and arms, they saw something else.

The fetus was wrapped in two objects that were attached to the fetus as well as a small tail. "What in the hell is that?" Bernard asked in shock. "Congrats Bernie, it seems your son is a meta. He has actual wings!" the doctor yelled with excitement. "I can't believe it, how's this possible ?" Bernard asked bewildered. "I'm not sure, maybe there is a dormant meta gene in your lineage that awakened in him; I can't be too sure unless we conduct further investigations. Either way, I believe this to be a gift", the doctor announced. "A gift indeed" Bernard replied excited. "Yes, a gift, but also with its own problem" Daniel spoke out. "Why do you say that?" Bernard asked. 'The P.E.A.I.B. that's what" he answered. "The what?!" Vivian queried, "The Paranormal and Extraterrestrial Activity Investigations Bureau" Bernard described. "They would stop at nothing if they ever found out that a metahuman existed.

They would most likely try to capture and perform experiments on that person or worst-case scenario, they would outrightly kill him. Basically, they are a secret, non-government funded anti-meta organization ", Dr. Hathaway reported. "How do you know all this? Bernard asked.

"Being a member of the World Organization for Science Scholars, the W.O.S.S., information about the plans and activities of the unit is leaked to me as well. We mostly disprove their supposed evidences of paranormal or extraterrestrial activity. Any true occurrence like your child would grant them great recognition and influence", Daniel answered.

"So, what do you suggest we do?" Bernard asked. "The mountains are the most suitable place for the boy to grow up. I fear that he may never have a normal childhood but we don't know what the future holds" Daniel informed. Bernard was surprised how Dr. Hathaway was able to handle the fact that for the first time ever, he was going to be a part of the birth of a supernatural baby, and how swiftly he answered his questions, but he didn't voice out his thoughts. "But what if she is due to deliver? I can't deliver a baby!" Bernard announced, somehow sarcastically.

Daniel turned off the screen after taking one last critical look. "I'll be coming with you for the time being, and after she delivers, I'll return to the city" he announced. "What about your job, here in the hospital?" Bernard asked. "It will be alright and besides, I have a lot of vacation days piling up, it's about time I use them", he announced with a smile.

"Excuse me, I'll have to get some documents ready. I'll be back in a second", Dr. Hathaway excused himself and walked out of the room into the hallway. He removed his cell phone and quickly dialed a secured number. When the person on the other end of the call answered he whispered into the receiver, "Subject-serum fusion was a success sir, moving on to phase three". "Keep up the good work. Be sure to report any changes", the voice responded and hung up.

Early the next morning, the two gentlemen began preparations for the move to the mountains. They bought and renovated an old but very large log house in a valley near a large lake. They then had several large solar panels installed at the large plain behind the house to provide electricity. They then had water pumps and filters installed to provide the house with clean and safe drinking water. They filled the house with anything and everything that would make living in the mountains, as comfortable as possible. A week after all arrangements were made, they moved from the city to their new home in the mountains.

A week passed after the expected due date but Vivian had still not gone into labor. "This is strange", Daniel said as he scanned Vivian's womb with his portable ultrasound scanner. "Is anything wrong with the baby?" Bernard asked in a worried tone. "There is nothing wrong. That's the problem", Daniel said in a puzzled tone. "I don't get your meaning", Vivian said. "It seems the baby isn't ready to come out yet. I'm guessing it is due to its metahuman genes. It probably needs more time to develop in the womb. We just have to wait until it's ready to be born", Daniel hypothesized.

Two months and a few weeks later, Vivian finally went into labor. Daniel asked Betty to bring the materials he had asked her to prepare while he and Bernard escorted Vivian to the delivery room they had added to the house during the renovation.

After everything was brought and set up, Daniel asked Bernard to hold Vivian's hands and comfort her while he asked Vivian, a first time, mother, to remain calm and push with all her might. After what seemed to be hours of pushing, Vivian let out a loud scream as the head of the baby began to crown.

A sudden red glow was emitted from the baby as its head appeared. Betty was so stunned that she almost collapsed onto the delivery room floor. Daniel was also stunned but he had to remain focused. "Come on, push! You can do it!" he encouraged as he aided the birth by lightly tugging on the baby's head. A couple minutes of painful pushing later, Vivian finally succeeded in birthing the child.

"Yes, you did it. It's a bouncing baby boy", Daniel announced and turned to Betty. "Lend me that towel, will you?" he asked Betty who obeyed immediately. "You did well honey. I'm proud of you", Bernard said as he kissed his wife who cried tears of joy.

Daniel gently wrapped the baby with the towel and took it to the nearby wash basin. After washing the baby, he brought it close to the bed. When he lifted the baby out of the towel, the baby, who had been quiet all this while, started to cry. The sound of the baby's shrill cry was ear piercing, enough to knock one out if they were not focused enough. Suddenly, the wings that were wrapped around the baby spread out simultaneously and began to flap up and down, even though it was a new born, the power in the wings were strong enough, almost taking Dr. Hathaway off the ground.

The doctor instinctively grabbed the bed frames with his leg, and with great strength, pulled himself to the ground and pulled the baby to his side. He began trying to calm the crying baby. Once the baby stopped crying, the wings stopped flapping and cuddled together on its back.

The baby's reptilian tail slowly swayed from side to side excitedly. He had scales all over his body and tiny claws on his little baby fingers as well as horn protrusions on his head. The baby opened its eyes and Dr. Hathaway froze. It revealed two yellowish-reptilian eyes. Daniel proceeded to hand the baby over to its mother to hold and to breastfeed. Immediately she took hold of her baby boy, he began to purr. "He's purring", Vivian said with a smile as she began breastfeeding him.

After a few seconds of breast feeding, Vivian felt a sharp pinch on her nipple. She withdrew her breasts from the baby's mouth and observed it. There were two small drops of blood oozing near the nipple area. He started to whimper, and Bernard saw a scared look on Vivian's face.

He drew closer to her bed and froze as well. Not only did the baby have reptile-like features but the baby had small fangs in his mouth. "I wonder how sharp they are", Dr. Hathaway thought to himself as he touched the tip of one of the baby's fangs. Blood oozed out of his finger as the fangs were extremely sharp.

"Damn it! That's sharp", he said out loud as he cleaned the blood of his finger. "Oh, my goodness, does this mean I can no longer breastfeed him without risking bleeding out?" Vivian asked with a rather despondent look. "I believe that will be for the best. Although, there are types of feeding bottles that can easily assist you in breast feeding him", Daniel suggested.

Betty, who had been petrified all this while, finally collapsed to the ground. "Oh jeez", Dr. Hathaway said as he attended to her. He carried her to her room and laid her on her bed. It took several days for Betty to come to terms with the fact that a human-whatever hybrid had been born right before her very eyes.

Bernard and Vivian, after thorough contemplation, decided to name him, Samuel Griffin, after his great grandfather. Their child looked extremely intelligent as he stared at his parents almost as if he could follow their conversation. "Samuel, we swear to keep you safe and happy as long as we live", Bernard swore as he hugged his wife and child and little Samuel started giggling loudly.
