"The pursuers are swift in their pursuit!"
Landis grasped a black feathered arrow between his fingers. Even held in his grip, the arrow's tail feathers still quivered, a mere probing shot from the adversaries.
The carriage door was now open, and Landis stepped out into the night. In the distance, atop an ancient tree, a figure stood tall on the treetop without bending its branches.
Behind, the road was blocked by a battalion of black-armored cavalry.
"You killed Lady Hongye!"
A cold and indifferent voice emanated from the person on the tree, stating their purpose for blocking the way.
"It's him! I could recognize him even if he turned to ashes. He coerced me out of the Phoenix Pavilion and then knocked me unconscious!"
One of the black-armored cavalry threw a woman off his horse. The woman stared at Landis and shouted.
As soon as she finished, the cavalryman who had thrown her off raised his beheading machete, swift and decisive. In one fell swoop, a head soared into the air, propelled by the hot blood from the severed neck.
"Kill him!"
The person on the tree spoke coldly, and the cavalryman urged his horse forward. The horse galloped on the official road, rapidly accelerating towards Landis.
The rider swung his machete towards Landis, and Landis, wielding the Red Sleeve Blade, intercepted the opponent's long slashing machete. In the night, sparks flew as the Red Sleeve Blade clashed with the formidable weapon.
The strength of the rider was terrifying; his movements were simple, direct, and skilled. Landis, using the Red Sleeve Blade, could barely match the opponent's strike.
Moreover, this strike didn't even involve the use of spiritual power.
The opponent's cultivation was undoubtedly on par with Landis, and the weapon in their hands was no ordinary one; it was already a spiritual weapon.
Scale-Armored Horse. Landis had noticed that the horse ridden by the opponent was covered in black scale armor on its belly and hooves, providing protection to the most vulnerable parts of the horse.
This was a war horse bred through the hybridization with demonic beasts, much stronger than regular war horses. Such horses were exclusive to the military in Western Qin and had limited distribution.
The identity of the opponent was becoming clear to Landis. According to what Landis knew, even the City Lord's Mansion in Tonghua City wouldn't possess such war horses. The only possibility was the Iron Cavalry stationed outside the city.
Unexpectedly, Lady Hongye had connections with the cavalry stationed outside Tonghua City.
There was no time for Landis to think further. The cavalryman, wielding his machete, attacked again, and there was not just one cavalryman on the official road. It was a dense, overwhelming mass of over a hundred cavalrymen. The most formidable, however, was the archer observing the battle from the treetop. He was the leader.
The Iron Cavalry stationed outside Tonghua City was formidable indeed! Landis had overheard people in the inn mentioning that this cavalry had been stationed there for over a month, but the reason for their presence was unknown.
Landis managed to force back one opponent, but just as he was about to seize the opportunity to counterattack, the archer on the treetop gestured, and two more cavalrymen charged towards him.
Seeing these newcomers, Landis understood that he was no match for this mysterious cavalry, especially with his current main combat force, the demonic beast, being non-combatants. Both Ashu and Xiaoqing were only Pulse Manifestation stage warriors and were incapable of facing these cavalrymen.
Today seemed destined to be a dire situation.
The two new cavalrymen joined the fray, besieging Landis. The Red Sleeve Blade flickered in the air, and Landis, relying on the sharpness of the blade, managed to break the machete of one of the cavalrymen. However, when he tried to take advantage of the situation and strike, a flash of light resembling lightning came at his neck. Forced to abandon his offensive, Landis focused on evasion.
Facing three opponents with higher cultivation levels, Landis could only fend off their attacks rather than launching a counterattack. The situation became even more precarious as the leader on the treetop continued to direct the battle.
Within this predicament, a black-feathered arrow shot towards Landis. Inside the carriage, another black-feathered arrow was shot out, colliding with the incoming arrow in mid-air.
Ashu, originally a proficient archer, had improved significantly in recent days, especially after Landis gifted her a spiritual-grade longbow. However, the vast difference in their realms made it impossible for her arrow to stop the opponent's, and Landis had no chance to dodge it. Determined to test the capability of his Thunder Tribulation Body, Landis deliberately didn't avoid the arrow. The arrow struck his abdomen, and despite leaving a shallow bloodstain, the spiritual weapon-level arrow only managed to wound the surface.
The skirmish paused momentarily as the three cavalrymen attacking Landis were taken aback. Two of them looked at the rider who had struck Landis as if accusing him of deliberately going easy on Landis.
The rider, on the other hand, was more annoyed than ever. He didn't know if he had held back or not. He had put all his strength into that strike, absolutely all of it. How could there be such a meager result?
Accustomed to training with massive stones, the rider had always been able to split a boulder of adult height in half with a single strike. However, under Landis' full defense, his machete had only left a superficial scratch.
Landis, enduring the wound from the arrow, now realized the formidable nature of his Thunder Tribulation Body. Taking advantage of the astonishment of the three cavalrymen, he unleashed the second move of the Seven Slashing Waves, slashing towards the rider who had previously struck him. The rider, quick to react, parried the blade with his machete. However, the force of the impact caused the rider's tiger's mouth to split open, dripping with crimson.
"Be careful!"
"Ah!"
The third slash of the Seven Slashing Waves arrived. Despite the warning from his companion, the cavalryman couldn't fully evade Landis' attack. He had his right shoulder severed by the blade.
