Chapter 2: I can change things

Steam surrounded Li Jiefan as she stepped out of the shower and began getting changed. She calmly walked back to her bed , luckily it was a sunday and her three other roomates didn't wake up earlier than nine on a weekend, and grabbed a her schoolbag and a laptop. Heading out the dorm room she waved goodbye to the dorm mother and headed to the library for some quiet planning.

Li Jiefan chose a quiet corner of the library, took her laptop out to start researching the best places for gear that she would need to survive the fast approaching apocalypse.

Li Jiefan was a broke University student who only had the chance to study in Y citiy's university because of her scholarship. She was forced to study hard to get out of her neglectful family home. Li Jiefan was not close to any member of her family but her younger sister, so it was safe to say she did not have any money to spend on supplies for the end of the world, and it was not like she had any chance of collecting enough money to buy any kind of specialised equipment or high-tech cars to survive the apocolypse so she came up with a much easier way to get what she needed, by stealing it.

Yes, Li Jiefan was going to research all of the equipment she needed, figure out the best and most convient place to gather it all and then stealing it in the confusion of the first day before everyone else starts scavenging.

And so Li Jiefan started searching the internet for outdoor enthusiast stores and high tech car manufactures.

"Hi.", Li Jiefan turned her head after two hours of research and saw her only friend at university, Chen Leichu in a classic preppy outfit and with long wavy hair. 

Li Jiefan felt her eyes tear up and her throat clog up with emotion, it had been years since she had seen Chen Leichu. Li Jiefan could remeber the first time she meet Chen Leichu in the dorms on the first week of school, Chen Liechu was bubbly and friendly to the point she could even make friends with the quiet, loner Li Jiefan.

Chen Leichu had bumped into her as Li Jiefan was coming back from class, Li Jiefan politely apologised with a small smile and tried to walk past her but being the social butterfly that Chen Leichu was, she would not let that happen and so the long haired girl grabbed her hand and shook it. Chen Leichu happily introduced herself and the moment she started talking, she didn't stop and before Li Jiefan knew it she was being pulled out of the dorm and having lunch with Chen Leichu and the two girls had been friends ever since.

Li Jiefan had not seen Chen Leichu for more than two years in the apocolypse after they got seperated in the chaos they faced trying to leave the Y city university and honestly she had always missed her.

"What's wrong Li Jiefan?" Chen Leichu asked with a concern filled voice. "It's nothing, I just got something in my eye," Li Jiefan said while she wiped her eyes, " Hey, how are you."

But Chen Leichu didn't look convinced," Are you sure, I have never seen you tear up like that." 

Li Jiefan knew that Chen Leichu was not the kind of friend who would stop asking questions and so she changed the subject," Have you done the essay yet?"

Chen Leichu face fell and she was immediately distracted," The essay? Is that not due in two weeks, because i have only begun the planning?" 

Li Jiefan smilled softly to herself as she looked at her forgetful friend, " No the essay is due next week, on monday"

" Are you serious!" Chen Leichu exclamed. A library assistent a few rows down from them shushed them, " Are you serious." Chen Leichu whispered.

Li Jiefan barely held in a laugh as she continued," Yes, do you want help with the research?"

Chen Leichu enthusiastically replied," Oh my god Li Jiefan, you are my hero!" 

Li Jiefan watched her friend take out her laptop and her notebook while she mourned this amazing friend who would disappear from her life in the next week when it dawned on her. Li Jiefan does not have to mourn anything, she is in the past, she can change the future. 

In that moment Li Jiefan resolved herself to make this time around different, to create the future she wanted, so she was gonna make sure that Chen Leichu got out of the school safely at least.

"Li Jiefan, hello?" Li Jiefan's thoughts were interrupted by Chen Leichu's call and she was brought back to the present," Yes." the short haired girl replied

Chen Leichu rolled her eyes with a smile and re-asked her question," Do you wanna get lunch after this?"

Li Jiefan smiled back at her, "Well I will have to look through my schedule and find space for you."

" We both know you don't have any other friends, stop joking around." Chen Leichu chuckled and through a pen at Li Jiefan who tried to doge half-heartedly.

Li Jiefan laughed and said," You don't have to be mean, okay, lets have lunch."

As Li Jiefan laughed with her friend at their favourite fried chicken place that she knew would be abanded and overrun with zombies in a week, she promised herself to enjoy these moment, to enjoy the small happy minutes before the world ended. She was going to mold her own future and she was going to live-not just survive despite the zombies and mutated plants.

But as Chen Leichu continued to talk about her newest crush Li Jiefan decided to push any thoughts about the apocolypse to the side and enjoy her day.
