The tension in the air was thick. Liam stood at the edge of the broken battlefield, his mind racing as he analyzed the situation. His Override ability had proven useful, but the limitations were starting to show. He had to think outside the box if he wanted to gain the upper hand.
Kai stepped forward, scanning the battlefield. "We should move before reinforcements arrive," he muttered, gripping his weapon tightly. "Something about that leader felt... off."
Liam nodded. "Yeah. The way they manipulated the system—it's not a normal ability. They weren't just hacking the game. They were rewriting it in real-time."
A glitched-out fragment of the defeated Titan Mech flickered nearby, remnants of its corrupted code dissolving into the environment. The leader had done something—bypassed something in the system. But how?
ECHO remained unseen, observing from the shadows. He had been watching Liam closely, waiting for the right moment to make a move. The boy was progressing faster than expected. Too fast.
As Liam and Kai moved through the ruins, a sudden distortion rippled through the environment. The terrain around them shifted—walls that weren't there before began forming, pathways closed, and their escape routes vanished.
Kai cursed. "This isn't normal terrain generation."
Liam narrowed his eyes. "No. It's them."
A slow, deliberate clap echoed through the shifting space. The leader of the mysterious group stepped forward, their figure flickering like a corrupted avatar. "I must say, you're adapting quickly. That's rare," they said, their voice carrying a distorted edge.
Liam clenched his fists. "Who the hell are you?"
The leader tilted their head. "Names aren't important right now. What matters is that you're beginning to understand how this world truly works. That's... problematic."
Kai tightened his grip on his sword. "We're not playing your games."
The leader smiled. "Oh, but you are. You just don't realize it yet."
Before Liam could respond, the environment collapsed inward. The walls rushed toward them, the battlefield rewriting itself once more. The system was reacting to the leader's presence—or obeying them.
Liam's instincts screamed at him. Move.
With a burst of energy, he grabbed Kai's arm and activated Override—channeling it into the fragmented terrain beneath them. The corrupted data around them flickered, and for a brief moment, Liam could see the code itself.
Something clicked.
He reached out—not just to break or control, but to rewrite.
The collapsing walls around them glitched and froze. The leader's confident expression faltered. "Impossible."
Liam exhaled sharply. His heart pounded. That was different. That was new.
ECHO, still hidden, observed intently. "He's starting to understand."
But the leader's surprise lasted only a moment before they grinned. "Interesting. Looks like you might be worth keeping alive after all."
The battlefield reset. The terrain returned to normal, and the leader took a step back. "I'll be watching, Liam Kane. Let's see how far you can go."
And just like that, they vanished.
Kai let out a breath. "What the hell just happened?"
Liam flexed his fingers, still feeling the residual effect of what he had just done. "I don't know. But I think I just broke something."
Far above, ECHO smirked. "Things are finally getting interesting."
