The Rift's First Trial

The corrupted shadows swarmed like a living tide, their distorted forms flickering in and out of reality. Each time one was struck down, it twisted and reformed, as if the Rift itself refused to let them die.

Liam didn't hesitate. His Override flared, a pulse of power surging through his arm. "Let's see how you handle this."

He extended his hand toward the nearest shadow, his ability gripping its unstable data structure. The entity spasmed violently, its form glitching out of sync with the Rift's reality. In seconds, it collapsed into scattered code, dissolving into the void.

Selene, watching from a distance, smirked. "So that's the trick, huh? Overload their already broken existence."

Kai wasn't as calm. "That's cool and all, but there's like a hundred of them, and I don't think Liam can take all of them at once!"

The corrupted figures moved with increasing speed, adapting to their presence. Their movements sharpened, becoming eerily precise. They weren't just attacking now—they were learning.

Liam's eyes narrowed. "They're getting smarter."

Echo, scanning the battlefield, responded instantly. "Correct. Data fragments are adjusting to external interference. Their response time has increased by 17%. Conclusion: Prolonged engagement is ill-advised."

"Great," Kai muttered. "Got any better ideas?"

"Yes."

Before Kai could ask, Echo's form glowed, its eyes flickering with streams of rapidly shifting code. The corrupted shadows suddenly froze for a brief moment—just long enough for Liam to strike.

Override surged.

A chain reaction rippled through the Rift. Liam's power lashed outward like lightning, destabilizing multiple enemies at once. The frontmost figures collapsed into digital static, their remnants consumed by the void.

Selene seized the opening, darting through the battlefield with inhuman precision. Her daggers struck pressure points, disorienting the remaining shadows even if she couldn't destroy them outright. "Liam, how many more can you take down?"

Liam gritted his teeth. "As many as I need to."

Kai exhaled. "Alright, screw it. I'm going in!"

He rushed forward, sword raised, slashing through the advancing enemies. His blade had no effect on their bodies, but his sheer presence forced them into disarray.

Liam took the chance. Override pulsed again.

One by one, the shadows fell apart, breaking into scattered pixels.

Then—

A new voice echoed through the Rift.

"Not bad. But let's see how you handle something stronger."

The air shuddered.

From deep within the Rift, a figure emerged.

Unlike the mindless shadows, this one had form. It was humanoid—tall and draped in black, its body flickering like corrupted data. Its eyes glowed red, and a long, twisted spear rested in its grip.

Echo immediately reacted. "Warning. New entity detected. Threat level: High."

Kai groaned. "Oh, come on! Can we catch a break?"

Liam, unfazed, gripped his sword. "No breaks. We finish this."

The spear-wielding figure charged.

And the real battle began.
