Riftborn’s Howl

The moment Liam took a step forward, the Riftborn Fenrir lunged.

A blur of abyssal black and crimson streaked toward him, moving faster than anything he had encountered before. The air cracked with raw energy as the beast's claws slashed through the space where Liam had just been. He barely managed to roll aside, feeling the force of the attack ripple through the cavern.

Kai and Selene reacted instantly.

Selene flickered into the shadows, reappearing behind the Fenrir in an attempt to strike at its hind legs. But the moment her daggers made contact, an unseen force repelled her, sending her skidding across the rocky ground.

"Tch," she hissed, steadying herself. "It has some kind of aura defense."

Kai swung his greatsword at the beast's flank, but the Fenrir twisted in mid-air, its unnatural agility allowing it to dodge effortlessly. Then, with a single powerful leap, it launched itself toward Kai.

"Damn it—" Kai barely had time to brace before the beast's impact sent him crashing into the cavern wall. Dust and debris exploded from the impact, and Kai groaned, pushing himself up.

Liam didn't waste time. He activated Override, his energy surging outward, attempting to latch onto the beast's consciousness.

But the Fenrir resisted.

A shockwave of dark energy burst from its body, forcing Liam to stagger back. His connection flickered, unstable, unable to fully take hold.

This one's will is too strong. I need to wear it down first.

"Echo, analyze its attack patterns," Liam commanded.

Echo's blue glow pulsed rapidly. "Its speed and reaction time are enhanced by abyssal energy. Direct attacks won't work unless we disable its mobility first."

Liam's mind raced. They needed a new approach.

"Selene, aim for its legs again—Kai, be ready to counter when it staggers!"

Selene nodded, vanishing into the shadows. This time, instead of a direct attack, she threw two smoke bombs at the beast's feet. The Riftborn Fenrir snarled, momentarily disoriented.

That was the opening Liam needed.

He activated Override again, but instead of trying to subdue the beast outright, he focused on slowing its movements—corrupting its energy flow just enough to weaken its reaction time.

It worked.

The Fenrir's movements became just a fraction slower, but that was all they needed.

Kai roared, swinging his greatsword with full force. The blade connected with the beast's side, sending it skidding across the cavern floor.

The Fenrir let out a deep, guttural growl, rising to its feet once more. But now, its breathing was heavier, its movements slightly sluggish. It was feeling the toll of battle.

Liam stepped forward, his eyes locked onto the beast's. "It's over," he muttered.

He extended his hand once more, Override surging outward like a chain, latching onto the beast's consciousness.

The Fenrir tensed, its crimson eyes burning with resistance. For a moment, it felt as if the entire Rift held its breath. Then—

The beast lowered its head slightly.

A silent acknowledgment.

[Override Successful: Riftborn Fenrir Subdued]

A wave of exhaustion washed over Liam, but he grinned. He had done it.

Kai let out a disbelieving chuckle. "You just tamed a Riftborn monster."

Selene shook her head, smirking. "Guess we're keeping a wolf now."

Echo floated closer, its tone neutral but intrigued. "This changes our calculations. A Riftborn beast is no ordinary companion."

Liam placed a hand on the Fenrir's head, feeling the raw abyssal energy still coursing through it. Unlike his other tamed creatures, this one was different. It wasn't just a beast—it was a predator that had thrived in the abyss.

And now, it was his.

For whatever lay ahead, he wouldn't face it alone.
