"It doesn't hurt."

Jayden Maguire caught Nana Monty's hand as it gently brushed his cheek, tried to smile, but it looked ghastly.

His facial nerves were damaged, making even the simplest expressions difficult to achieve.

Nana Monty sniffled and said in a muffled voice, "Keep lying to me then. A splash of hot oil while cooking hurts like hell, let alone the severity of your burns. How could it possibly not hurt?"

"Seeing you relieves the pain."

Jayden Maguire's voice was now slightly hoarser than before the accident, a result of smoke damage to his throat.

He held Nana Monty's hand tightly, the grotesque skin on the back of his hand starkly contrasting with Nana Monty's fair and smooth skin.

"You fool. Such a big fool," she said.

Nana Monty hugged Jayden around the waist, burying her face in his chest where she could faintly smell the ointment—an odor she had noticed when he embraced her on their way to the hospital.

There must still be unhealed wounds on his body.
