Ren leaned against the wooden railing of the treehouse, studying Kaelen with curious eyes. The Ecodian seemed calm yet burdened, as though a storm brewed within his soul. After a moment of silence, Ren spoke.
"Kaelen… would you consider joining us?" His tone was steady, yet the weight of his words hung in the air. "We're searching for the elemental stones, and from what you've told us about your abilities, you could be a huge help."
Kaelen crossed his arms and sighed, his moss-green eyes scanning the horizon through the open window. "You're asking a lot, Ren. The Nature Kingdom isn't just a place—it's my home. I've spent years surviving here, avoiding the traps, the predators, and…" He hesitated, his expression darkening. "The lies."
"What lies?" Sakayanagi asked, stepping forward.
Kaelen shook his head as if shaking off a bad memory. "The truth here is hidden, buried beneath layers of deceit. The leader of the Nature Kingdom, King Oranos, claims he provides the kingdom's lifeblood, a mysterious energy called Verdant Vitalis. It's supposedly the force that keeps the forests alive and flourishing. But I've seen the truth."
He glanced at Ren, his voice low. "Oranos isn't the savior he pretends to be. He's been hoarding resources and manipulating the kingdom's people for his own gain. And I suspect he's searching for the Nature Stone—just like you."
Ren's eyes narrowed. "If you know this, why haven't you done anything about it?"
Kaelen let out a bitter laugh. "What could I do? My role here is simple—survive. Speaking out against Oranos would mean death, not just for me but for anyone who supports me. That's why I hesitate to join your journey. If you fail, you'll bring me down with you."
Ren didn't flinch. "We won't fail." His confidence was unshaken, his resolve clear. "But you have a choice. If you're content hiding in this treehouse while the kingdom suffers, that's on you. Or you can help us take back what's been stolen and uncover the truth."
Kaelen stared at Ren, his expression unreadable. After a long pause, he let out a deep sigh. "You're stubborn, I'll give you that. Fine, I'll join you. But don't think this means I trust you. You'll need to prove yourself, and fast."
Sakayanagi smiled faintly. "Fair enough. Welcome to the team."
Kaelen grabbed a large map rolled up in the corner of the room. "Let's not waste any more time. There's a town not far from here. It's hidden beneath the Great Canopy, where the trees grow so dense that sunlight barely reaches the ground. We can resupply there."
On the Trail to the Town
As they made their way through the forest, Kaelen led the group with a natural ease, weaving through the towering trees and tangled vines. The air grew cooler, and the forest seemed to thrum with life. Kaelen glanced back at Ren, his voice serious.
"Don't trust anyone too easily here," he warned. "Oranos has spies everywhere—agents who blend into the populace, loyal only to him. They'll report anything suspicious back to him. I've seen good people disappear for less."
Ren nodded, his mind racing. "So he's hunting the Nature Stone in his own kingdom while lying to his people about it?"
"Exactly," Kaelen replied grimly. "He pretends that Verdant Vitalis is the kingdom's salvation, but in truth, it's a tool of control. It keeps the people loyal, dependent. And all the while, he hoards resources and hunts for the stone. He'll stop at nothing to claim its power."
Shigan clenched his fists. "Sounds like he needs to be taken down a peg."
Kaelen gave a humorless chuckle. "Easier said than done. Oranos isn't just a ruler—he's a powerful wielder of nature itself. If you face him, you'll need more than brute strength. You'll need strategy, cunning, and allies."
The group fell into silence, the weight of Kaelen's words sinking in as they continued their trek through the forest. After hours of walking, they finally reached the outskirts of the town beneath the Great Canopy. Massive trees towered above them, their branches forming a dense, living roof that blocked out the sky. Flickering lights from bioluminescent plants illuminated the area, casting an otherworldly glow.
Kaelen stopped and turned to the group. "This is it. Stay alert. We'll rest here for now, but keep your wits about you. The deeper we go, the closer we get to Oranos's territory—and his watchful eyes."
