The air was thick with darkness, the energies of the Luminous Abyss surging like a torrent around them. The shadows writhed as if alive, forming twisted shapes that lunged at Yu Zhong and Wu Ren. Yu Zhong's hand crackled with dark energy, the shadows bending to his will as he cleaved through one creature after another. But no matter how many he cut down, more surged forward from the void.
Wu Ren staggered beside him, clutching a deep gash on his side, blood seeping through his fingers. His breath came in sharp, painful gasps. "Yu Zhong… I can't… hold out much longer," he managed to say, his voice barely above a whisper. His charismatic veneer had long faded, replaced by a pained grimace as he struggled to stay upright.
Yu Zhong glanced at him, frustration mingling with determination. "Stay back! I'll handle them," he ordered, stepping in front of Wu Ren. He could feel the darkness within him stir, responding eagerly to the Abyss's energy, threatening to consume him. But he couldn't let it take over—not now, when his companion was barely clinging to life.
With a sweeping motion of his arm, Yu Zhong unleashed a wave of shadowy blades, slicing through the approaching creatures. Yet, for each one he destroyed, three more emerged from the swirling darkness. Their eyes glowed with a malevolent green, and their bodies seemed to shift and blur, as if they were shadows given form.
One of the creatures lunged, and Yu Zhong barely managed to intercept it, his shadowy blade meeting the creature's ethereal claws. The impact sent a jarring shock through his arm, forcing him back a step. He gritted his teeth, pushing back with all his strength, but the relentless swarm was closing in.
Behind him, Wu Ren sank to one knee, the strength leaving his limbs. He tried to raise his blade, but his arm shook too much to wield it effectively. "Why… why did you bother to save me?" he rasped, his voice tinged with bitterness and confusion.
"Don't be a fool," Yu Zhong shot back, his tone as cold as the shadows swirling around him. "We survive together, or not at all."
He channeled the darkness, forming a barrier around Wu Ren, but it cost him—he felt the pull of the Abyss grow stronger, tempting him to unleash the full extent of his power. His vision dimmed for a moment, the whispers of the Luminous Abyss clawing at his mind, urging him to let go of restraint. But he fought back against the seductive call, focusing on keeping the barrier intact and fending off the attackers.
The shadowy creatures sensed his distraction and pressed their advantage. Claws raked across Yu Zhong's side, drawing blood. He retaliated with a burst of shadow energy that obliterated several of them, but he knew he was losing ground. His breaths came in ragged bursts, and sweat mingled with the blood running down his face.
Despite the pain, a fierce determination burned in Yu Zhong's eyes. He fought with everything he had, each strike of his blade laced with desperation. He wouldn't let the Abyss claim him, not yet. But the creatures kept coming, an unending tide, and even Yu Zhong's formidable power was beginning to wane.
Suddenly, one of the creatures slipped through his defense, aiming straight for Wu Ren. Yu Zhong's eyes widened, and without thinking, he hurled himself in front of the attack. The creature's claws tore into his shoulder, sending searing pain through his body. But he held his ground, forcing the creature back with a surge of dark energy.
The effort left him panting, his legs shaking from the strain. Wu Ren, barely conscious, managed a weak, incredulous smile. "You… truly are a fool, Yu Zhong," he muttered, before his head slumped forward, unconscious.
Yu Zhong stood over him, breathing heavily, his vision swimming with exhaustion. The darkness around them thickened, the creatures regrouping, readying for another assault. He gripped his shadow blade tighter, preparing to face them once more. But the weight of fatigue bore down on him, his muscles screaming in protest.
Just as the creatures surged forward again, Yu Zhong's knees buckled, and he staggered, barely able to keep his balance. His vision blurred, the edges of the world fading into shadow. He could feel the energy of the Abyss pulling at him, trying to drag him deeper into its depths. For a fleeting moment, he wondered if this was where his journey would end—defeated by the very darkness he sought to master.
But he shook off the thought, clenching his jaw. "Not yet…" he whispered to himself, forcing himself to stand. He would fight until his last breath if he had to. The shadows coiled around him, forming a desperate shield against the incoming attacks.
Yet, as the creatures closed in from all sides, their claws tearing through his defenses, Yu Zhong realized that he had reached his limit. His shadowy barrier began to crack under the relentless onslaught, and he found himself cornered, with no path of escape.
The last thing he saw before the darkness overwhelmed him was the glowing eyes of the creatures, filled with cold malice. But even as he faced the encroaching doom, a grim smile touched his lips. He would make sure the Abyss remembered his defiance, even if he fell within its depths.
And then, the shadows closed in, leaving only the echo of his defiance in the Luminous Abyss.
