Months passed, the seasons changing. Summer turned into autumn, and then, winter arrived. The town was now adorned with a blanket of snow, sparkling like white jewels under the weak winter sun.
I woke up, shivering slightly and snuggled under my blankets. The cold air of the morning came through the open window's, making me shiver. This little body was so sensitive to temperature changes.
I groggily got up and looked outside. The world was covered in a shimmering white layer of snow. The streets were silent except for the occasional crunch of footsteps and the quiet whispers of the breeze.
A soft knock came from the door, and Lily's voice followed.
"Michael, are you awake?"
"I'm up mom", I replied, rubbing my eyes sleepily. I got out of bed and made my way to the door, opening it to see lily standing there with a warm smile dressed in a simple, yet traditional outfit. She wore a loose, cotton blouse cinched at the waist with a belt, over which a woolen shawl was draped, the edges lined with intricate lace patterns. Her long skirt, falling just below her ankles, was made of a heavier fabric in a soft shade of green, and on her feet were comfortable leather boots.
"Did you sleep well?."
She asked, caressing my hair. I nodded, still trying to shake off my drowsiness.
"It's cold, isn't it?"
She said, looking at me. I nodded, feeling the chill in the air even more now.
"Get dressed quickly, it's almost time for breakfast."
As she started to walk away. Lily stopped halfway down the hallway and turned back to look at me.
"Are you excited for tomorrow, Mickey?."
She asked with a smile, knowing tomorrow was the start of the new year and my birthday.
"Yes i am."
I said with a wide smile, looking forward to it. After all, it was my favorite time of the year. The excitement of the new year and my birthday together was always a thrill.
"And tomorrow will be my 5th birthday since i was reborn into this world."
I thought, the thought sinking in. It had been 5 years since i had been given a second opportunity in this life. Time had flown by so fast.
With that, I quickly got dressed and made my way to the dining room. I sat down next to my dad on a chair at the long wooden dining table. The room had a cozy atmosphere despite the cold of winter outside, the fire in the fireplace providing a warm glow.
"Good you're up, the food's getting cold."
Robert said, looking at me as I sat down, ready to start my day.
"Sorry, i overslept."
I then looked down at the food in front of me.
It was a simple winter meal, hearty and filling. Steaming hot porridge, a slice of thick bread, and a bowl of fresh berries. My mouth watered slightly as i started digging in. The porridge was warm and comforting, the bread crispy and the berries sweet and juicy.
"It seems winter is hitting hard this year"
Lily said, looking out the window. It had been snowing heavily the past few days and the snowfall didn't seem like it was going to let up anytime soon.
"It sure is."
Robert nodded in agreement, sipping on his mug of black tea. We continued eating in silence for a while, enjoying the warm food in the cozy room. I finished my porridge quickly.
I swallowed my food and looked at Robert.
"How about we make a snowman after breakfast?"
Robert paused for a moment, not sure what I meant. He then chuckled.
"A what?"
He asked, looking at me quizically.
"It's a sculpture made from snow. You roll big snowballs and stack them on top of each other, kind of like a tower, and then add other things to decorate it, like sticks, rocks, and stuff like that. It's really fun."
I explained to him, animated as i pictured the snowman in my mind while making motions with my hands, trying to describe the way it looked.
"A snow sculpture, huh?"
Robert seemed amused at my idea, chuckling at my excitement.
"Sure, why not. We can do that after breakfast."
I recalled in my previous life. Where I used to lived, snow was rare and when it did come, it was usually just a short, light snowfall. I remembered the few times it did snow heavily, how i would try to make a snowman, but it would be small and pitiful because of the lack of snow.
I had always longed to build a huge, towering snowman, it was a dream of mine.
After breakfast, i quickly changed into my warm winter clothes, and donned the gloves my mom had made for me. They were made of wool and were a little loose but they kept my hands warm nonetheless.
Robert, my dad, also put on his coat and gloves, and we both headed outside ready to start our snowman project.
