What Do Humans Call Us?

Kanaru stared at the foreign-looking man before him. This person didn't seem to be a human born with gene mutations. He looked more like a monster who forced himself to become human. The eyes were too small, and the lips were rather too slim. The teeth didn't follow a natural curve, and the spaces around each facial feature were too wide. The man didn't even have an ear.

The bird prince noticed because the man reached out his long arm and held the side of his face with long, slender fingers. The thumb, as long as the other fingers, stroked Kanaru's right ear. The thing said, "Oh, so even if birds didn't have a visible ear, your human looks still do have them."

"…what am I talking to?" Kanaru didn't have the time to be scared. He could try to carve at this thing's face if he grew mad. However, the aura emanating from the thing made Kanaru innately fearful. It was close to how the mutated unicorn-nuckelavee made him feel.
