CHAPTER TWENTY NINE: MY LANGUAGE

CHAPTER TWENTY NINE: MY LANGUAGE

After eating, we all got up from the chairs and walked out of the dining hall

"Isn't that your brother, Floral?" Morayo asked as she spotted my brother

I turned to look at who she was referring to and yes, it is my brother talking to a junior student

"I don't feel like talking to him" I said to her as I looked away

"Wow, I didn't know that is your brother. You guys don't look alike" Vanessa said as she looked at the person Morayo is talking about

"Yes, he is my brother and I get a lot of that comments that, we don't look alike" I said as I turned to look at her

"Now that I see it, you guys do look alike" Vanessa said as she took looked at both my brother and I

"I don't know what to say about that" I said as I shrugged

"Let's go before we get punished for being late to the assembly" Victoria said as she took the lead

We followed her to the assembly

After assmebly,

I got to class and for the first time since I came to this school, John is already in the class before me

"Good morning John" I said as I sat beside him and put my school bag on the floor next to the desk

"When did we start talking casual?" He asked as he flipped the page of his Basic Science text book

"Since now" I said as I rested head on the table and faced him

He didn't respond to what I said, "I am glad I get to see your quiet side" I smiled as I looked at me

"Whatever and don't stare at me like that or you will fall for me" he said as he continued scanning his textbook

"Gosh" I immediately raised my head from the table and looked at him while sitting properly "Don't even think about that, I am not going to fall for you" I said as I laughed

"Then don't stare" he said and still not looking at me

"By the way, were you lying to me about Sunshine being your girlfriend?" I asked as I rested my hand on the table and then put my head on my hand and looked at him

"What? Why did you ask? I thought you said you weren't interested, are you suddenly interested?" He asked as he used a second to look at me and then at his textbook that he is not even reading at all

"For heaven's sake, can you talk to me as a normal friend and not as someone that looks at me as your crush?" I asked as I looked at him awkwardly

"By the way, why did you ask?" He asked acting normally as he looked at me

"I am just curious because, there is someone that likes you" I said as I look at him

"You? Then you don't even have a chance near me" he responded rudely

"What is wrong with you? I said someone and not me!" I said to him calmly trying not to get furious at his childish talk

"Well, Sunshine and me are very close childhood friend and whoever that is crushing on me shouldn't even bother to think about dating me" he said as he looked at me with a very awkward look

"Oh... I even wonder why someone will crush on you with this your behavior"

"There are many"

"Then, tell them off" I said as I raised my head and sat properly

"How can I?" He asked as he looked at his text book

"You are so impossible" I said as I nodded my head and carried my bag from the floor, dusted the under and put the bag on my lap

"To be sincere, it depends on the kind of person that falls for me. I just have my spec when it comes to girls" he shrugged as he flipped the page of his basic science text book

"And that kind of girl shouldn't be me" I said as I unzipped my bag to bring out the first subject notebook that we are having now since the Basic science teacher just entered the class

"Jeez, you can't even be part. When I am talking that you can't be part, I mean you are not even in my top one million list" he said as he also unzipped his bag to bring out his basic science notebook

"If you know how much I am glad that I am not part, you will say congratulations to me" I said as I dropped my bag to its normal position as before

"Good morning class" the basic science teacher greeted as she dropped her textbooks on the table in front of the board

"Good morning ma, we are happy to see you ma. God bless you ma and your family ma! Amen ma" the whole class chorused as we all stood up to greet her

"Thank you, you may all sit down" she said as she opened her textbook and then looked at the board "can someone come clean the board?" She asked as she pointed at the board and then focused on her textbook

A male student came forward to clean the board

After having three subjects non stop, the bell rang to settle our minds

When I heard the bell rung for break time, I woke up from dozing in the class

"When next are you having me class captain?" The Yoruba teacher asked as packed his books together and carried it under his armpit

"Sir, we will be having you this Friday" the class captain answered him

"Okay, till then" the Yoruba teacher said and then faced us "ę ma gbabę lati ko assignment yii o" (don't forget to write your assignment o!) He informed us in Yoruba language before leaving the class

Yoruba can be sometimes boring to learn but, it is so interesting to say and use to insult. Pardon me!

Even when it comes to most English words spoken by Nigerians, there must surely be 'abi', 'sha', 'shebi' in their sentences. Lol!
