CHAPTER FORTY FOUR: MY SUNDAY!
When Victoria and Morayo woke up, I told them about my mom visiting.
I shared the chocolates with them. They commented on how delicious and satisfying it is
The next day which is Sunday opened another first time for me.
I woke up at the sound of banging of lockers from the hostel prefect, as usual
"Wake up! Wake up! Get up and have your bath!" She said to us
Some of the students in my room groaned as they sat up from their beds
We all did the normal duties which included bathing, brushing teeth, drying our wet bodies with our towels. Some uses their wrappers (native or Ankara piece of cloth measured in either half yard or a yard. Depends on the person's body) to dry their wet bodies
Then afterwards, the students enter their hostels to dress up or even start by rubbing body Cream or lotion or any medicinal cream on their bodies before dressing up in their underwear
After some minutes later...
"It is time to move outside, it is Sunday and you guys should not forget to take out your Sunday wear, hijab, beret, scarf, quran, Bible, bags and any other necessary things you need for your Sunday. Christians should always remember that no slippers is allowed into the chapel, anyone putting on slippers will not enter into the church. You must dress appropriately in the house of the lord.
Secondly, before dressing into your white gown, don't forget to do your portion" the hostel prefect informed all of us as we arranged and packed everything needed before leaving the hostel
I put in my white gown which is our Sunday wears, into my bag. I also didn't forget to put my Bible and scarf inside
"Don't you have sandals or shoes or even your school sandals is okay?" Victoria who had been watching me, asked.
"I have a black shoe, I don't want to put it into my bag so, it won't stain my white gown" I explained to her
"Okay, I was just thinking that since your shoe is neat you can put it into your bag but, if you insist on not doing it, I won't force you to do something against your will" she said as she stood up and carried her hand bag that is filled with whatever she needs
"Thanks for understanding" I said to her as I zipped my bag and stood up as well
"Morayo!" Victoria shouted her name from our corner as she walked towards Morayo corner "Don't forget to take out the money" she said to her
...
"Hey, are you leaving like that?" Morayo asked me as she looked at my corner
"Yes, why?" I asked her confused by her sudden question
"You didn't even lay your bed very well, don't you think you should lay it well. If you don't lay it very well, the house mistress will call you back with cane" Morayo advised
I turned to look at my bed and saw that the part that I sat on looks crumbled
I laid the bed very well before we left the hostel
We were just in time to leave the hostel before the hostel prefect started counting down for the students inside the hostel
I remembered when I was still inside the hostel and the hostel prefect was counting down
I had to crawl outside of the hostel since, I was still inside the hostel when she reached one
The knees still hurt from the crawling, I wonder how babies cope with their crawling
I did my portion and sat with Victoria outside the solar building
"Where is Morayo?" I asked Victoria since, I can't find Morayo here or anywhere near the hostel
"She went to keep space for us in the chapel" Victoria answered as she chewed the sausage roll in her mouth
"Keep space? Why?" I asked confused by what Victoria said
"Normally, the Christians in this school are so many and the chairs in the chapel are not enough for all the students. Some of the students have to carry benches from the classes to sit. In order to avoid that, we have to keep seats for us to sit after breakfast" Victoria explained as she squeezed her gala wrappings and threw it in the dust bin near us
"Okay but, how do the students know that we kept space on the chairs?" I asked her as I became more curious
"In order to keep space, you have to put a book or a bible to tell whoever wants to keep space that our seats are reserved" Victoria answered before drinking the pure water she bought earlier
Pure water are sachet water sold in some parts of Africa. It is cheaper and more affordable than bottle water.
"Okay so, which books did she take to reserve our seats?" I asked again curious to know how Morayo would keep space for us in the chapel without enough books
"Stop asking questions that has obvious answers to. She has enough books of course" Victoria answered as if already tired with my random questions
I looked away and turned to look at the student the house mistress keeps scolding about her portion.
"What are we eating for breakfast?" I asked her as I turned to look at her
"Bread and boiled egg with tea" Victoria answered as she unzipped her bag and brought out her white gown "Do you want to buy fried egg for your bread?" She asked me curious as if reading my mind
I was thinking of how I am going to eat the bread with boiled egg, yuck!
"Ajebutter, let's go buy fried egg for our breads" Victoria smiled as she folded her gown and put it back into her bag before zipping it
Ajebutter is a Yoruba language that means a child born in silver spoon
I smiled with her as I stood up and followed her to the matron's shop, where she sells different kind of cooked foods that, you will wish to eat with your food
Matron can be defined as the assistant to the house mistress
Pronounciation:
Ajebutter- Aj- eh - butter. Now pronounce together
