Chapter Two

Sly ordered chicken and chips while I ordered roast beef and fried rice. I noticed he really loved chicken.

Sly got a call, "Hello sir, Yes sir, I sent the files to Paul and he forwarded them to the company. Yes sir, 300million dollars sir, Yes it will be sealed by tomorrow. Yes I understand sir. Alright sir. Do have a pleasant evening sir".

Everything about Sly was exquisite, he sure looks good. I silently admired him while we was on call. I wondered why he chose me out of the three girls. I have good looks too but then people want who they want and it could have been any of the girls.

The ambiance of the restaurant created this cozy feeling in me. I had never been on such a date before. Everything was as perfect as what we see in movies. While Sly spoke, he signalled to me to crave my indulgence. He made sure I didn't feel ignored. His call took a bit longer but that wasn't a problem to me, I mean looking at him from time to time gave me an inexplicable excitement.

Everything was happening so fast right? It's a wonder, Sly could sweep any woman off her feet. He has that prowess. Well I fell for it, I mean, any woman would.

I kept wondering where he had been all my life and why I would have to meet a heartbreaker before finally meeting him. I prayed that he would want a serious relationship. I didn't mind the distance.

Juanita always travelled to meet one of her "other guys" as she referred to men she frolicked with. I didn't find travelling from Bridgeport to Linca a big deal. I know he woulf still visit Bridgeport for business or to spend time with June his sister whom he mentioned casually.

I really looked forward to meeting June and getting to know her. I wanted to be a part of Sly's family.

With the numerous "sir" that Sly kept saying, I knew he was on a call with a superior. He dropped the call and apologized profusely for taking so long. He began to talk about how rich his boss is and how he's from a wealthy family background. He said that he didn't let his privileged background get into his head.

He asked me about my course of study and how I was coping with my studies. I talked about the hassles involved in studying Industrial Chemistry. The mathematical aspect of the course is the area I struggled with the most.

I almost had a carryover in one of the courses. We had many lecturers who made things more difficult and complicated. I had wanted to change my course of study in second year but my uncle discouraged me. He urged me to keep holding on.

I chose the course because I loved it but I never expected the difficulties I encountered in the course. My friends who were studying Theatre and Performing Arts couldn't help but wonder why I studied like I was reading Medicine.

Sonia got up at night to read with me sometimes. She was sometimes worried about graduating with good grades. Her uncle had promised her a car if she made a distinction. This made her try to study harder. This wasn't the case with Juanita, she would always that what would be would be. She believed that fate would always have it's way.

With this believe, she slept peacefully while we read. It is however noteworthy that she never had to carryover a course. She did not make As but she made no F neither.

One would classify her as an A student if she had taken her time to read.

Sly demanded to know how we met and decide to rent an apartment together. I narrated how we all met. Juanita was the connecting dot to the two of us. The apartment originally belonged to her.

She was from a comfortable family, she paid our first rent for the two bedroom apartment. She said she couldn't stay alone. I met her in a mall when I had gone to buy the things I needed to return to school. Uncle Bob was still searching for a place for me through house agents.

I met Juanita at the cosmetic section of the mall. Coincidentally, we used the same brand of body lotion. We got talking when we picked the lotion almost at the same time. She demanded to get a review of the lotion from me.

As our discussion proceeded, we got to know that were just admitted to the same university. She asked if I had gotten a place and told her about Uncle Bob's search. She offered that I stayed with her.

I had offered to refund her half of the rent but she declined and stated that her parents wouldn't mind. I was unpacking my luggage when she came in with Sonia. They had met in class and Sonia had wanted to come for lectures from home until she got a place.

If Juanita had not offered to accommodate her, she would have been travelling some kilometers to get to school while she looked for a place. The school hostels were not really comfortable, but some less privileged students stayed there anyway. Juanita also refused to accept a refund from Sonia.
