Chapter 12: New Rivals and Unlikely Allies

As the school day drew to a close, Eli and Maya exited the building together, basking in the afterglow of the day's accomplishments. Maya, ever supportive, was the first to break the comfortable silence between them.

"Seriously, Eli, you were amazing in class today!" Maya exclaimed, her admiration clear in her voice. "Why didn't you tell me sooner about your powers? I almost fell out of my seat when I saw what you could do!"

Eli chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "I wanted it to be a surprise," he admitted, his smile betraying a hint of pride in his friend's astonishment. "Besides, seeing the look on your face was totally worth the wait."

Maya playfully rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her delight. "Well, consider me surprised and impressed. Just don't keep me in the dark next time, okay?"

As they reached the point where their paths diverged, they exchanged goodbyes, with Maya reminding Eli that she expected more stories of his adventures. Eli nodded, promising to share every detail, before they parted ways.

Unbeknownst to Eli, one of his classmates, Lucas, had decided to follow him. Lucas, who had once looked down on Eli for his perceived weakness, found his opinion dramatically altered after witnessing Eli's display of power. The transformation from the boy he deemed weak to a formidable force intrigued Lucas, sparking a mix of respect and rivalry within him.

After tailing Eli for a while, Lucas made his presence known, stepping out in front of him with a suddenness that caught Eli off guard. Eli's surprise was evident, a mental note made to enhance his awareness in the future.

"Hey, how did you get so strong?" Lucas asked, curiosity and a hint of respect lacing his tone.

Eli, caught off guard by the directness of the question, responded with a light-hearted comment, "I never skip breakfast," he joked, offering a nonchalant shrug to mask his reluctance to dive deeper into his secrets.

Undeterred, Lucas pressed on, proposing a spar between them. Eli, however, declined, citing prior commitments. Lucas's interest was piqued, but Eli remained deliberately vague, keeping his plans close to his chest.

Seeing Eli's refusal, Lucas shifted his approach, suggesting a future training session together instead. "If you're ever free, I think sparring could be good for both of us," he said, the offer hanging between them, an olive branch extending beyond their previous interactions.

Eli, surprised by the offer, paused to consider it. Training with Lucas, someone who could potentially match his strength, presented an opportunity to test his limits in a way he couldn't with Maya. The prospect of a challenge, free from the fear of causing unintended harm, was appealing.

"Alright, let's plan for that," Eli agreed, surprising even himself with his openness to the idea. "It could be good to see where I stand."

Lucas nodded, satisfied with the agreement, a new sense of camaraderie forming from the ashes of their past misunderstandings. "Looking forward to it," he said before they went their separate ways, each lost in thoughts of future battles and the potential growth they could achieve from this unlikely alliance.
