Chapter 10: Alpha On Our Side

All her stealth helped her in the crowd. She found a spot close to the council table, in the second row of the shifters who had chosen to show up and make their voices heard. Including her family. She stayed away from them.

Cyran stood before the council, locking eyes with Councilwoman Valentina Vermello. The pint-sized leader of the council looked serious. A vague memory of Valentina, her twin sister Violetta who “joined” the cult, and their three sisters all ambushing Hades Ombra made Naomi smile.

Jiro sat on Councilwoman Valentina’s right and Beta Barrett on her left. Pack law and tradition held that the Beta always co-chaired the council. Luna Garnet also sat with them.

Cyran remained standing, and Naomi recalled the first council meeting she ever attended, shortly after Cyran’s and Garnet’s parents were murdered. The game had been scarce that year and the hunters wanted to report about the cause. Her mother Cortona had given the speech on behalf of the hunters.
