Mutation of Humanity

I'm sorry for making you worry." I hugged her, and we started walking back. However, I could feel that it wasn't the same direction we came from because we had been heading west, and now, Second Sister started moving southeast.

In terms of direction, I always trusted her. She's a mutation of humanity, and their sense of direction is stronger than ordinary people.

She extended her neck, sniffed the air, confirmed the direction once again, and continued forward. Gradually, I couldn't walk anymore. How did I manage to walk out earlier? My feet started to ache, but I kept following her.

Gradually, I saw the plain where Noah City was located and also saw grass. Ahead, a strange flash appeared, the brightness of which was like a diamond between heaven and earth, glinting enticingly in the dazzling sunlight.

Second Sister began walking towards that sparkling point, and I followed curiously. Gradually, that gem-like thing became larger. It wasn't a gem; it was a square-shaped water area!

Water?!I ran over, and it was a small pond. However, the shape of the pond wasn't irregular; it was circular. The edge of the water pool was clearly made of steel. This was... a reservoir?!

Second Sister also arrived at the edge of the water pool. She lowered her head to sniff, sniffing very carefully. The clear water reflected her face, and her white hair hung down into the pool as she leaned over, gently drifting.

In my eyes, the pond was very clear. I didn't know what Second Sister was sniffing.

Oh right, I haven't washed my face.

When I crouched down, Second Sister sat up straight, no longer sniffing as if she found the water in the pool somewhat disdainful.

I started washing my hands, plunging them into the clear water. I felt like a new person; this water was so clean. My hands floated in the clear water, and the sunlight sprinkled on them. Suddenly, some strange things emerged from the water, tiny and extremely subtle blue light points. However, because there were more and more of them, they became apparent in the sunlight. They were like blue fireflies dancing in the pool.

Curiously, I bent my face even lower, took a deep breath, and submerged my face in the water. I observed the floating blue light points in the water. They seemed alive and were gathering towards me. They adhered to my face, like little elves landing on my face. I couldn't help reaching out to touch them, as if catching fireflies in the water, feeling playful. However, when my hand touched them, they shattered like light points, disappearing.I caught and caught, but these tiny blue light points were getting fewer and fewer, like bubbles that diminished the more I played with them. After playing with them, I started to feel uneasy. This reservoir is on top of Noah City; could it be Noah City's water source?

Could those blue light points be some high-tech stuff? Like water purification technology? What if I ruined it by playing around?

I nervously withdrew my hand, feeling like I had caused trouble. Upon careful thought, if it was high-tech, it wouldn't be so easily ruined. They weren't flashing before I arrived, so I shouldn't scare myself.

"Whoosh!" At this moment, Second Sister bent down and started drinking from the water pool. Seeing her drink, I also felt thirsty. I hesitated for less than three seconds, then buried my face to drink water. Since Second Sister drank, this water must be fine! I trust Second Sister.

"Gulp, gulp." Ah~~~~ I felt incredibly comfortable as my whole body replenished with water molecules, and I also washed my face. Well... if this is Noah City's reservoir, is it inappropriate to wash my face and hands here? Whatever, our tap water comes from the reservoir, and people still swim in it every year. And don't people die every year? Extreme thoughts!

One can't be too fussy; being too serious is too tiring...

When strolling back to Noah City with Second Sister, Edmund and Emery were anxiously looking out at the entrance. Upon seeing us, relief appeared on their faces.

"Where did you guys go?!" Emery was about to greet us when suddenly, urgent footsteps came from inside the gate. Second Sister immediately became tense. Her whole body stood up, claws out, wings spread, and she roared fiercely: "Ha——"

What happened? Why is Second Sister so vigilant?

Edmund, startled, hid behind the door. Like a frightened little rabbit, he peeked half of his face from behind the door, his gray-blue long hair resembling long rabbit ears hanging beside his face.

Emery also stopped in his tracks, looking serious and cautious. He looked at me and said, "Stay calm, Yvette, make sure Second Sister stays calm too."

I immediately reassured Second Sister, who was still roaring inside the gate: "Hiss! Hiss!"

"What's going on?!" I asked in confusion.

Edmund looked inside the gate, also puzzled. Emery turned around and shouted, "Stop right there! What are you doing? Are we at war?"

Two people wearing what looked like astronaut suits ran out from inside the gate. They wore white sealed suits, plump and resembling biohazard suits, complete with helmets.Emery, seeing them, appeared puzzled. "Reed, Bruce, what are you doing? Why are you wearing radiation suits coming out?"

One of the two, holding an instrument resembling a thermometer, explained, "Emery, Shepard said Yvette walked out of the safe zone, so Bruce and I need to check if she has any radiation on her. This is just a routine check. Tell Yvette not to misunderstand and not to worry."

Emery was momentarily stunned, then turned around, a look of surprise on his face. "You walked out of the safe zone! No wonder it took you so long."

I was also a bit bewildered. "I didn't know." How did Shepard know I walked out of the safe zone? What did he see with his eyes?!

Eyes?!

In my mind, Second Sister's drawn eyes suddenly surfaced. Could it be that the eyes Second Sister drew were referring to this? Shepard couldn't be the code name for a drone, right? Otherwise, how could it see so far?

Edmund looked at me in surprise for a while, blinked, then walked out from behind the door and began to explain, "Yvette, if you come back from a radiation zone, you need to undergo a check because there might be residual radiation on you, harmful to ordinary people. If the residual radiation is too high, we'll conduct decontamination. You don't need to be nervous; everyone returning from a radiation zone undergoes this kind of check."

After Edmund finished speaking, he looked at Emery, signaling him to explain as well. Emery, still looking surprised, said, "You actually ran so far... Quite suitable for our squad."

"Emery!" Edmund called out, and Emery looked at him. "Explain it to Yvette!"

Emery smiled, turned back to me, and said, "Yvette, our exploration team undergoes checks and decontamination each time we come back. It's nothing to worry about." Emery's face showed a relaxed and easygoing smile, apparently considering it a commonplace and natural occurrence in this post-apocalyptic world.

Now, both Edmund and Emery stood still, seemingly maintaining a certain safe distance from me. However, I knew they were not guarding against the radiation on my body but were cautious about Second Sister.

Although I wasn't sure if Edmund had abilities, Emery definitely did because only individuals with abilities could go on field missions to search for essential resources for the people of Noah City. Since Emery went on field missions, he must be a radiation emitter as well.

"Oh, it's okay, go ahead and check," I said. I understood this; many sci-fi movies about biohazards have similar scenes, so there's nothing I can't accept. Instead, I looked at them with curiosity. "Aren't you going to check Second Sister?" Are they afraid of Second Sister and dare not check her?

"Flying Corpse Monsters usually don't go to radiation zones," Edmund explained. I was somewhat surprised, and he looked at Second Sister with a studious gaze. "They are sensitive to radiation. We call them living radiation detectors, especially the maternal Flying Corpse Monsters. Radiation can affect their reproductive abilities."
