These students, almost all from impoverished families, also bore the title of Scholar. The Imperial Court promised that once they had studied abroad for a few years and returned, they would be directly granted the title of Graduate and could either enter the Yamen or teach at the Imperial College.

Among the students, there were a few exceptions, one being Liang Jinzhen, who caused a fuss about going to the foreign barbarian country to study his beloved mathematics. Another was Yi Gege, Pan Zhanyi, who wanted to experience a different world.

There were also Qian Yide and Cai Xiaoji.

Qian Yide inherited Old Master Qian's adventurousness and speculative nature, believing that this journey would transform him upon his return. He believed that he might not necessarily qualify as a Graduate like his elder cousin Qian Yishan, so he preferred to go overseas, thinking that it might be even more respectable than being a Graduate.
