Nini'an was reluctant to speak, but she still did. She said, "This changes nothing."
Lanling nodded without saying anything.
No pleas, no words—he simply lay there motionless.
"You won't say a single word?" Nini'an suddenly raised her voice.
Lanling shook his head and said, "I'm tired of living anyway. Last time, I was killed by my lawfully wedded wife. This time, you kill me—it's no big deal."
At those words, Nini'an trembled and asked, "What do you mean?"
Lanling simply stared at the sky with wide eyes, showing no intention to respond.
"Why did your wife want to kill you?" Nini'an questioned.
Lanling did not answer.
"Speak! Why did your wife want to kill you?" Nini'an demanded again.
Lanling remained silent, giving off the impression that he was long done with life, essentially telling her to get it over with.
The sword had vanished. Nini'an found a dagger not far from her and realized she could use it to kill Lanling.
