As the night settled over Allerium, the weary knights found respite in a modest inn tucked away in the heart of the city. Among them was a female knight, known simply as Grayson, who had been tasked with caring for the young boy they had rescued earlier that day.
"Grayson, take care of the boy," Vice-Captain Marcus instructed, his voice firm but gentle. "Make sure he's washed and fed. The captain wants him ready to travel by morning."
Grayson nodded in understanding, her heart heavy with the weight of responsibility. She had a little brother back home, not much younger than the boy in her care, and the sight of him tugged at her heartstrings.
"I'll take care of him, Marcus," she replied, her voice soft with compassion. "Don't worry, he'll be in good hands."
As she set about the task of bathing the boy and preparing him for bed, Grayson couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness for his plight. He was so young, yet he had already endured more hardship than most adults ever would.
"Hey there, little one," she murmured, her voice gentle as she washed away the dirt and grime from his small frame. "You're safe now. No need to be afraid."
Once the cleaning was done, Vice-Captain Marcus returned with a set of clothes that he had procured for the boy. "These should fit him," he said, handing them to Grayson with a nod of approval.
"Thank you, Marcus," Grayson replied, grateful for his thoughtfulness as she dressed the boy in his new attire.
With the boy clean and fed, the knights gathered downstairs for a meal, their spirits buoyed by the promise of warmth and companionship. Grayson watched as the boy eagerly devoured his food, his hunger a stark reminder of the hardships he had endured.
"Slow down, little one," she chided gently, wiping his mouth with a cloth. "There's plenty for everyone."
As the night wore on and the men began to drink and laugh, Grayson stayed by the boy's side, her heart heavy with worry. She knew that the road ahead would not be easy, but she was determined to do whatever it took to keep him safe.
Finally, as the hour grew late, Grayson made her way upstairs to their shared room, the boy nestled securely in her arms. As she lay down beside him, she whispered soothing words of comfort, her voice a gentle lullaby in the darkness.
"There's nothing to fear now, little one," she whispered, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "You're with us, and we'll protect you. Sleep now, and rest easy."
