He ran after the girl as she raced across the zigzagging paths, trying to catch her, but she seemed always one step ahead of him.

 

" Catch me if you can, big bro," she laughed as she ran into a faint light at the end of the alleyway. There, at a dead end, a woman sat down, her hands cupped around a burning candle, as if to protect it.

 

" Mom! I found him! I brought him!" The girl laughed as she encircled her and the woman smiled, patting her head gently.

 

" You did well, dear," the woman then directed her attention to the man standing before her, panting for air, his face contorting in bewilderment at what he was seeing before him. " Welcome back, Jaber. We were waiting for you."

The man looked around the place and, one by one, as though they were there all along, sitting by the candle, his father and two other siblings stood up from the shadows dancing around, the elder of them holding a toddler in her arms.
