(Carter POV)
To say that you see your life flashing before your eyes when you look into the face of death isn't an understatement.
Upon turning around, I saw the face of a rather stern-looking Omni man looking right at me, barely a couple of feet away from my face.
Honestly, it took more effort not to teleport out of pure surprise, and I was actively trying to fight my instincts as I would instead not set him off.
So, as I slowly backed up and leaned against the counter, I simply stared back without breaking eye contact. Thankfully, I was able to keep a straight face.
For a couple of seconds, we just stood there in silence, staring each other down. While there weren't any alarm bells ringing, I couldn't be sure yet, but before I could say anything, Nolan got the first word in: "Do you know when we were training earlier today? I was surprised, surprised that my son, who has had no experience with his powers, was learning things almost faster than I had."
I simply narrowed my eyes at him and bid that he continue.
Floating towards one of the opposite walls and staring at the various pieces of clothing that Art sells to customers, Nolan continued, " While Mark hasn't shown much promise yet, I could definitely tell he's learning; he'll make a strong Viltrumite one day."
"Well, he's about as stubborn as you, so I believe that it's inevitable." Omni man just chuckles as if recalling something and turns back to me.
" I can tell you care about him and about your mother. Carter, you're going to need to be there for me when I can't." If I didn't know any better, I would think he was trying to compliment me and impart some important lesson to me, but I know the context behind those words.
"Of course, Dad. What do you think of the costume?" Omni man then floats around me and nods.
"Well, it's definitely a fine-quality super suit. Have you thought of a name yet? You can't exactly introduce yourself with your real name." With a small huff, I wave them away as he tries to inspect the suit.
Omni Man seems to want to say something more, but a voice comes over the PA system.
[I hope you two have inspected some of my merchandise, but Mark's suit is almost done, so I need you to get your butts down here.]
Within a couple of seconds, we were already back in the basement, and standing on the display was Mark in his classic invincible suit. A small smile graced my face as I witnessed his first suit-up.
" Definitely one of your best Art." Omni man says, patting his old friend on the back.
"I was hoping he would go for the yellow and orange suit I gave him, but it's not one of my best. This one, I believe, is the one. How does it fit, Mark?" After he flies into the air and does a few tricks, he lands back down and gives Art a thumbs up.
After Omni man pays art for his work, we exit the place, but Mark has to take off the suit as he plans to make some adjustments overnight. I offered to make my own modifications. Mark refused, as he wanted to do it himself.
Since it was almost nighttime, we returned to the house, and Omni Man had to meet with the guardians of the globe to discuss the dragon he faced in Hong Kong. Thankfully, I could use my tech jacket to create a tracker that I then placed on Omni Man's Cape that would interface with the guardians of the globe's hideout.
Once Omni Man makes his way inside, I will have full access to their systems within a couple of minutes.
But for now, I sit at the table and eat dinner with Mark and Debbie.
"So, Mark, were you able to get your suit picked up?" Debbie asked while changing the channel on the television.
"Yeah, Mom, Art definitely knows what he's doing, although I will definitely say that I was not a fan of the first one." Debbie chuckles as she sips her wine, and I smirk, thinking of Mark in the Bulletproof suit.
I did manage to get a picture of Mark in that suit, which I may or may not use for some blackmailing later. Debbie then turns to me and asks a similar question.
"What about you, Carter? Were you able to get your suit picked out?" I nodded as I summoned my suit over my clothes.
"Wow, that's definitely impressive and not a normal piece of clothing, Carter. What exactly is that?" Then, I dismissed my normal super suit and explained.
"The best way to explain it is that their Nanotech fibers, which I can mentally control using this watch I have on my hand, allow me to essentially have my costume on the go without having to worry about changing." Mark looks awestruck as Debbie smiles to herself.
"Well, that's definitely impressive. Just make sure that no one sees you getting in or out of that costume. We don't want random supervillains popping up because both of you now have a secret identity to keep." After she says this, we both nod our heads.
Nothing much else was said during dinner other than how we were doing in school, with Mark complaining about the upcoming senior year finals. I just enjoyed the atmosphere before what was coming shook the world to its core.
Soon after picking up all the dishes and placing them in the dishwasher, I went upstairs to wish them both good night. After closing my door and activating all of my privacy barriers, I entered my warehouse and decided to call upon an old friend.
As soon as I enter the warehouse, I see Silk going over some of the data from the farms and the various butcher houses we have. After giving him a small wave, to which he returns, I head over to the genie lamp sitting all alone on its table.
After taking a deep breath, I pick up the bottle and rub it, and blue smoke begins to appear from the genie bottle. Jinn takes her form.
"Well, well, it's been a while, hasn't it? I hope you've been enjoying yourself, Mr. Davenport." As she says this, she continuously floats around in circles.
" I have been well, but I assume you want to get back down to business. I have my wishes for the next ten years." Jinn then floats upwards and nods while awaiting my wishes.
"For my first wish, I desire that my genome can never be studied nor that my appearance can be used against me. For my second wish, I desire an enhanced healing factor as I have seen how violent this world can get, and I don't think I can spare myself from the action. And for my last wish, I desire that my technology cannot be studied without my express permission. Are these wishes acceptable?" In response, the woman simply nods with a finger snap. A golden light surrounded me, and I felt more secure. Upon checking my DNA, metaphysical walls had been built up around them, keeping them from being studied.
" Your wishes have been fulfilled. I am happy that you were thinking about what you want to wish for many. It almost reminds me of a time when a girl once asked how to defeat an immortal being but never actually asked how to defeat her. It was almost funny, but before I go, the boss has one additional gift for you before I go. Since you finally decided to enhance yourself with a new race, he assumed you would want to keep yourself together eventually. So here, take this." From her hand, a golden orb repair wish rushes towards me, and after entering my body, I realize what I have been given.
Due to the nature of the jump chain, I am constantly switching bodies unless I take a drop in origin, which then just leaves me in my actual state of being. But now, I could combine my alternate forms, so I won't have to worry about losing my various racial properties even in new worlds.
Coalesce: With this, you can combine the features and traits of base forms and alt-forms as you like and seem favorable. You can access all of their abilities simultaneously but count them all at once should they be relevant for outside powers. There's some serious flexibility to this; have fun with
(To put it simply, he can now essentially hybridize himself, so he'll never lose out on any racial powers, even if he ends up in a new body and eventually to the dominant genes of a Viltrumite. It'll all come together to form something new)
After bowing in respect, the genie returned the gesture and returned to the lamp. As I carefully placed the bottle back on the table, my tech jacket alerted me, and it seemed that one of my nanobots had arrived at the guardians of the globe's base of operations.
Now, I have a location to use when I gather their DNA samples after their unsavory demises. At the same time, I am slightly annoyed that I cannot intervene. I need the scales to turn in my favor, but I also need Omni Man unconscious.
So, I am sorry, Guardians of the Globe, but your sacrifice shall not be in vain. As I sit down at my terminal, I begin to place back doors in the Guardians of the Globe's security systems and wait until Omni Man makes his move.
(For further clarification on the wishes, the first wish is meant to be the standard gene lock so that no one can clone or make an exact copy of him. The second wish gives him the regeneration of essentially Wolverine from the 616 comics, so he will be much harder to put down. Finally, the third is the standard black boxing for his tech so that no one else can study it since these came from the genie. They can still be overwritten by being more potent than the universal level, but they are very few and far between the invincible universe. I apologize if these weren't the wishes you guys chose. These are the ones I decided on the chapter and will pick up the pace)
