Chapter 297 - Drinking Together
Sona, visibly flustered by Serafall's teasing, began setting the table with a blank expression, serving rice for herself and Mahiro.
"Sona-chan, what about me?" Serafall whined, eyeing her empty bowl and Mahiro's filled one.
"You're playing favorites!"
Sona glanced at the rice cooker, her silence conveying a clear message: serve yourself.
Serafall pouted, then turned to Mahiro with a sly grin. "You know, Mahiro-chan, Sona may look all serious now, but she was adorable as a kid."
Sona froze, a flicker of alarm crossing her face.
"When she was little, Sona-chan asked me why my chest was so—"
Before Serafall could finish, Sona shot up, clamping a hand over her sister's mouth and swiftly swapping their bowls.
She glared at Serafall, then stole a glance at Mahiro.
Seeing his amused stare, a faint blush crept across her cheeks.
"Don't listen to her nonsense."
"She loves spouting weird stories. You get it, right, Mahiro-kun?"
"Totally," Mahiro said, nodding with mock sympathy.
Sona exhaled, relieved her quick reflexes had spared her embarrassment.
"Sister, eat quietly and stop talking nonsense," she said icily.
Serafall nodded vigorously under Sona's grip.
Satisfied, Sona released her, returned to her seat with poised grace, and refilled her bowl.
"Sona-chan's scary," Serafall mumbled, then glanced at the juice on the table.
"Just juice today, Sona-chan? No wine for a special dinner like this?"
"You were supposed to buy ingredients, but you just watched TV all day," Sona said, her tone flat.
"Besides, Mahiro and I are minors. Japanese law prohibits drinking."
"But you're a Devil, and he's the wielder of Boosted Gear! Human laws don't apply," Serafall countered, as if it were obvious, leaving Sona momentarily speechless.
"Plus, Kuoh Academy's on break for the tripartite talks, so no classes."
"A little wine won't hurt," Serafall added.
With the school chosen as the talks' venue, Kuoh Academy had dismissed ordinary students under the guise of a holiday, fortifying the campus with defensive wards.
Only Devils and select staff remained.
"Speaking of wine, I've got something special," Mahiro said, smiling.
"Special wine?" Serafall's curiosity piqued.
Sona looked over, intrigued.
"It might not impress a Maou, but its flavor is a hundred times better than any wine I've tasted," Mahiro said.
Serafall's eyes sparkled. "Really?"
As a Maou, she'd sampled the finest drinks, but none surpassed the human world's top vintages.
Mahiro's bold claim intrigued her.
A flash of light appeared in Mahiro's hand, revealing a 750ml bottle, its seal airtight, trapping the aroma within.
This was divine wine.
Mahiro had raided Soma's cellar before leaving, taking most of its stock.
He still recalled Soma's rare distress—usually stoic, the god had nearly broken down.
Mahiro had left a few jars behind out of pity.
He broke the seal.
Instantly, an intoxicating fragrance flooded the living room, overpowering the food's aroma.
The scent was indescribable, a sensory delight.
"What is this?" Serafall asked, her face alight with surprise.
"A kind of special wine," Mahiro said, pouring a glass for Sona and Serafall.
"Try it."
The liquid was clear, like water, but its rich scent set it apart.
Serafall took a sip and gasped.
"Delicious!"
Her eyes gleamed.
In biblical mythology, no true wine god existed, unlike other pantheons.
The exclusivity of divine wine, a treasure even among gods, made it a rarity.
Serafall had never tasted anything like it.
Sona sipped hers, though her restraint kept her from addiction, unlike those adventurers.
"Mahiro," Serafall said, her playful demeanor shifting to a mature, steady presence—the aura of a Maou and Sona's guardian.
The seamless change impressed Mahiro.
"Thank you for saving Sona," she said earnestly.
"Sona's my friend. It was the right thing to do," Mahiro replied with a smile.
"Sona's always been so serious, with few friends her age besides Rias," Serafall shook her head.
"But since coming to Kuoh, she's opened up, surrounded by people who care about her."
"Having a reliable friend like you means a lot to me."
Her gratitude was heartfelt, and Mahiro responded with equal sincerity.
The trio clinked glasses, the divine wine flowing freely.
Soon, a drunken haze settled over them.
Sona, with the lowest tolerance succumbed first, slumping onto the table in a deep sleep.
Serafall and Mahiro continued, the wine's potency testing even their limits.
Eventually, Mahiro's consciousness blurred.
In the dim light, he glimpsed a fleeting vision—a graceful figure moving above him—before darkness claimed him.
