The Haba dog is a local breed, also known as the Beijing dog, typically standing at around 20 to 23 centimeters tall. It's also referred to as the Shih Tzu, Pekingese, and a collective term for small folded-ear dogs bred from crosses with other breeds in various local dialects. These small dogs with short limbs are deeply cherished by urban women.
What Tom and the others saw now was an authentic Beijing dog. With its white long fur, short limbs, and dark eyes and nose, it measured approximately 32 centimeters in height.
The most striking feature of its mutation was undoubtedly its eyes, emitting red light at night, with a cold-blooded gleam. In the pitch-black house, those red eyes seemed as terrifying as demons from the depths of darkness, causing several thugs to scream in terror on the spot.
"Hehehe, I'm not a professional warrior, or else I wouldn't have partnered with that Zhang Shisan. But this mutated dog has been my pet since early on, and it obeys my every command. A dog that used to be easily kicked away has now become a behemoth. Haha, are you ready to be torn apart by this behemoth?" With a gesture from the black-clothed man, the Beijing dog charged towards Tom.
"Fire!" Boss Bo shouted loudly, giving the order to shoot. However, even with bullets loaded with reduced gunpowder hitting the running Beijing dog, they couldn't penetrate its thick fur, slowing it down even slightly.
Tom clapped his hands together, activating two crystals, and a faint glow enveloped his entire body, ready to face the Beijing dog's attack.
The Beijing dog grabbed him in its mouth but didn't swallow him directly. Its feeding habits made it instinctively tear food into small pieces before swallowing, which also prevented Tom from being swallowed whole upon their first encounter.
After a few unsuccessful attempts to bite, the Beijing dog vigorously shook its head from side to side, causing Tom, who was in its mouth, to sway back and forth, making him dizzy.
With a "smack," Tom was flung away, crashing into a cabinet before falling to the ground. Falling from a height of over a meter, even with enhanced defense, Tom was still severely shaken.
While his skin was tougher, he couldn't completely dissipate the internal injuries caused by the overall inertia impact.
Struggling to get up, Tom saw that the blue crystal had dimmed considerably.
Truly a mutated Beijing dog, its biting and grappling strength had been enhanced. Even with crystal-level defense, it still consumed a lot of energy.
"I can't take this much longer," Tom shouted loudly, "Run! Run!"
Boss Bo was taken aback. He knew Tom couldn't hold on any longer and immediately waved his hand, shouting, "Retreat! Retreat!"
Others instinctively obeyed Boss Bo's order, running to the window and climbing down the rope to escape.
Only Boss Bo remained behind the window, with a handgun in one hand and a submachine gun in the other, guarding alone. "Tom, are you okay?"
"Go!" Tom yelled. "If you don't leave, how can I?"
Boss Bo shouted, knowing he couldn't escape anyway. If Tom died, the next target for the black-clothed man would be everyone in the camp.
He let his subordinates leave first just to let them inform Uncle Wei as soon as possible to evacuate the crowd. Every escapee counted, and he naturally wanted to stand by Tom's side, whether in advance or retreat.
Tom was picked up again, and he had already seen that the blue crystal was about to collapse. Once the blue crystal failed, his enhanced defense would be gone. His small body and bones couldn't withstand being torn into pieces in an instant like a pig's bone.
But at this critical moment, the Beijing dog suddenly received a blow from somewhere and "howled" as it flew out, throwing Tom aside.
In Boss Bo's eyes, it seemed as if the Beijing dog had been kicked away by someone (who hadn't become smaller).
"Who?"
"Observer No. 267, you've violated the rules." A tall and sturdy black-clothed man stood where the Beijing dog had been standing originally. He didn't turn back but coldly stared at the struggling Beijing dog.
"You're... Zhetian..."
"Enough!"
"I'm sorry!" The first black-clothed man knelt down, trembling all over, showing obvious fear. "I know I'm wrong. Please spare me."
"Let me deal with your pet first."
Feeling his owner's fear, the mutated Beijing dog was aroused instead, barking furiously and then charging fiercely towards the sturdy black-clothed man.
"Hmph!" The sturdy black-clothed man sneered, showing no fear in the face of the towering and aggressive Beijing dog. As the Beijing dog charged forward and opened its mouth to bite, he raised both hands and grabbed its upper and lower jaws, astonishingly stopping the mutated Beijing dog with his own strength alone.
This left Tom and Boss Bo dumbfounded on the side. "How much strength and reaction speed does he need for this?" Tom wondered.
"Take that!" The sturdy black-clothed man shouted, swinging his hands, and once again flung the Beijing dog away.
This time, the Beijing dog crashed into the wall next to Tom, the impact heavy enough to momentarily paralyze it. Before it could even recover, the sturdy black-clothed man swiftly slammed into its head.
With a "thud" on the first strike, he hit the dog's nose hard, a crucial weak point. Once it suffered severe damage, it could instantly paralyze the dog.
The sturdy black-clothed man's force was substantial, and the subsequent second punch struck the dog's neck, rendering it unable to move while emitting a miserable howl.
The third punch landed on its head. Despite having a hard skull, this blow from the sturdy black-clothed man completely ended the Beijing dog's suffering, leaving it motionless with its head tilted.
"Just three punches..." Tom watched in astonishment.
Even in the past, it would take quite a strong person to kill a dog with just their fists, even a small-sized breed like the Haba dog. It would usually require a hard object like a stick or a hammer. But now, with everyone reduced to 1/24th of their original size, Tom was confident that with his 4.5 times strength, he couldn't achieve this with just three punches, especially against a mutated Beijing dog, whose body's toughness would be even higher.
Yet, with just three punches, this sturdy black-clothed man managed to kill it.
"He must have used a red crystal! But... can a red crystal enhance strength to such a degree?" Tom's hands trembled slightly, unsure if he felt excitement or fear. These two black-clothed men seemed to be a team, but the first one seemed to have violated some rules of their organization, which led to the mutated Beijing dog being killed.
If the Beijing dog was dead... then wouldn't these two witnesses of each other's actions also be silenced? This would include... the more than one hundred people at the camp.
Tom could only hope that Boss Bo's subordinates were fast enough to inform Uncle Wei and start evacuating. Every escapee counted, and he hoped they could at least escape.
The kneeling black-clothed man was still trembling, while the sturdy black-clothed man picked up the large knife thrown by Boss Bo, inspected it, and then asked the equally petrified Boss Bo, "Let me borrow your knife."
Boss Bo widened his eyes and quickly nodded. The opponent was too strong; could he dare to refuse?
The sturdy black-clothed man easily sliced open the abdomen of the mutated Beijing dog with the knife, then waved towards the kneeling black-clothed man, "Go in and get it yourself."
The black-clothed man didn't dare to disobey. Even though he had a wound in his chest from Tom's stab, he still clutched it and staggered inside the Beijing dog's belly.
After a while, the black-clothed man emerged from the belly of the beast, now dressed in red and dragging a huge crystal.
This crystal was taller than a person and couldn't even be hugged fully by one person; it was enormous.
The sturdy black-clothed man nodded in satisfaction, approaching while the black-clothed man knelt again, "Please... spare me... I won't dare to offend again."
"Go back to the nearest base immediately. Whether you live or die depends on your own luck."
The black-clothed man felt like he had been pardoned, bowed his head, clutched his chest wound, and leaped onto the windowsill, glaring resentfully at Tom before leaving.
The sturdy black-clothed man threw the large knife back to Boss Bo. "Your knife modification is not bad."
Boss Bo chuckled bitterly. "It was him who modified it, not me..."
"Don't be afraid. I won't kill you. You've worked hard. If you want to survive, work even harder. I won't take away the energy gems and crystals he collected; they're all fragmented and of little use. Consider it payment for borrowing your knife... Oh, and here's some advice: Don't eat the flesh of creatures that have consumed humans unless they've absorbed crystallized energy. How do you tell? It's simple. Use a crystal to touch their bodily fluids; if the crystal lights up, don't eat it. For example, this dog had eaten a person in the morning, and it still hasn't fully digested."
With that, the sturdy black-clothed man hoisted the huge crystal onto his shoulder, jumped onto the windowsill, and disappeared into the night with a leap.
It was only then that Tom and Boss Bo breathed a sigh of relief, gasping for air. They could see the joy of surviving a disaster in each other's eyes.
Regardless of the organization's intentions, they could see that they had their own rules. It seemed that the act of driving living people to feed animals was not allowed, which is why the sturdy black-clothed man appeared to correct the situation. Moreover, they generously spared them, leaving Tom and Boss Bo feeling as if they had narrowly escaped death.
To punch away such a large mutated Beijing dog, such strength was something Tom couldn't achieve at present.
"Tom, they... also used the power
of crystals, right?"
"I don't know... Didn't you notice?"
"What did you notice?"
"The bigger the gemstone, the stronger the enhancement effect it provides. But they didn't visibly carry any gemstones or crystals on them, at least not from what I could see."
"Yeah!" Boss Bo suddenly realized, "So, are they hidden in their clothes?"
"Secondly, after activating their power, their arms would emit a faint red light. But in such a dark environment, did you see even a hint of light on them?"
"No, there was no light. You're right, no light... Does that mean they have innate superhuman abilities, without needing to rely on crystals for strength enhancement?"
"No, they need them. Otherwise, why would they bother opening the dog's belly and letting that person go in to retrieve... Such a large crystal, I've never seen one that big."
Boss Bo was completely puzzled now. "Wow... Who are they?"
"Perhaps... they are fanatical followers of Darwin."
