Chapter 15 Logic's Plan_1

Lin Sen walked onto the stage with firm steps and began cheerfully, "I am the only one who is not a Wallfacer standing here, and I will represent Mr. Luo Ji in announcing some recent work plans.

Please do not mind my identity; everything is part of the plan. Mr. Luo Ji might prefer to stand in the audience and watch his plan unfold! After all, he has been watching from there for these four years."

Even if there were objections to this in the meeting, nobody was willing to question Luo Ji. Wallfacers were special, and Luo Ji was even more so.

"Dr. Luo Ji's first plan," Lin Sen said calmly, "is to develop Mind Tactility technology that allows people to communicate without any barriers.

Trisolarans are good at calculation and analysis, their thoughts are transparent, and they are not good at scheming. Besides this, we know very little about the Trisolarans.

They are certainly studying us humans, our thought patterns, our everything.

We need to study them too, but we don't have any material to work with, so there is only one way: to make our own thoughts transparent.

The plan requires the PDC to provide top global neuroscientists to study a brain-based Mind Empathy technology, to recruit a group of brain tactility volunteers to study the thought and behavior patterns shared by minds, thereby analyzing and studying Trisolaran behavior patterns."

After some discussion, the chief neuroscientist of the PDC Science Advisory Group replied, "Our current technology does not have the capability for comprehensive and accurate perception of thought waves.

In theory, it is possible to transform human thought waves into electrical signals and then restore them as thought waves, but since human brain thought involves the quantum level, the required amount of computation is too huge for current computers. It is estimated that it won't be possible until the computing power of computers 20 years from now."

"Studying Trisolarans is a lifelong task," Lin Sen replied. "If we temporarily cannot achieve brain-based Mind Tactility, Mr. Luo Ji hopes to establish a Wallfacer Project's Brain-Computer Interface Research Department to study equipment that can accurately detect thought waves.

Such equipment would not only help in early research on Mind Tactility but could also be used in many sensing and controlling technologies, and it doesn't need to have comprehensive and accurate perceptual capabilities of human thought waves."

"This research can be started at the current stage!" the chief scientist of the PDC Science Advisory Group said.

The PDC Chairman decided, "The PDC Staff Group unanimously approves this plan."

"Dr. Luo Ji's second plan is to establish a Wallfacer Project's Nanomaterial Research Department, bringing together the world's top nanomaterial research talent and all the advanced results. The plan is to invest a massive amount of resources to find a method for mass production of nanomaterials as soon as possible."

"In fact, we have been increasing the investment in nanomaterial research. We believe there is no need to establish another Wallfacer Project's Nanomaterial Research Department!" replied the PDC Chairman.

Clearly, the PDC immediately recognized the crux of the problem, which wasn't nanomaterial research but control over the space elevator.

The PDC wanted to maintain absolute control over the space elevator; Lin Sen also sensed their shrewdness, his mere probing was immediately pushed back. Despite Luo Ji's significant deterrent effect, they were not going to relax their grip on certain rights.

Lin Sen did not back down: "We request that Wang Miao's nanomaterial research team be incorporated into the Wallfacer Project's Nanomaterial Research Department as part of the Wallfacer plan."

"The PDC Staff Group unanimously approves!" the PDC Chairman declared after some communication. The PDC also saw that Lin Sen was asking for the moon, and it was their due responsibility to provide Luo Ji with certain resources. Moreover, it was just Wang Miao's team they wanted, which wouldn't greatly affect the PDC's main defense plans.

"Dr. Luo Ji's third plan is to establish a Wallfacer Project's Controlled Fusion Research Department, which gathers the world's top controlled fusion research talent and current results to achieve a technological breakthrough with concentrated resources," Lin Sen continued.

"This is the same as the previous topic, and it is not approved.

"Humanity's breakthrough in controlled nuclear fusion technology is imminent, and there's no need to establish another research department. If the Wallfacer needs this technology, they can simply apply for technology sharing after the breakthrough," the PDC Chairman said with resignation.

"I request that Dr. Ding Yi's High-Energy Particle Research Team be assigned to the Wallfacer Project's Controlled Fusion," Lin Sen continued.

"While high-energy particles are somewhat related to controlled nuclear fusion, their fields are still quite different. In fact, both of these are part of the PDC's mainstream defense strategies. Does the Wallfacer confirm the need for these?" asked the PDC Science Advisory Group.

"It's part of the plan!" Lin Sen replied.

"Well, the establishment of a Wallfacer Project's Controlled Fusion Research Department is approved, and Dr. Ding Yi's High-Energy Particle Research Team will be transferred to your department!" The PDC quickly agreed to these conditions. "Is there anything else you need?"

"No, not for now. The rest of the plan will have to wait until breakthroughs in nanotechnology and controlled fusion technology are achieved," Lin Sen finished, stepping down from the platform without giving the audience a chance to ask any questions.

"I hereby announce the conclusion of the eighty-fourth Wallfacer Project hearing of the United Nations Planetary Defense Council," the PDC Chairman immediately declared, ending the meeting.

The three plans seemed unrelated: high-energy particle colliders had no meaning under the lockdown imposed by the Sophon, nanotechnology was a step towards space, and the purpose of brain-computer interface was unclear.

The high-energy particle collider and brain-computer interfaces were Lin Sen's fallbacks, while nanotechnology was key for competing for resources and a say in matters.

As for controlled nuclear fusion, the original timeline achieved a breakthrough after thirteen years into the crisis—a first-generation controlled fusion. Mature third-generation controlled fusion wouldn't come until significantly later, in the post-crisis era.

Lin Sen knew the contribution that Ding Yi made to the first-generation controlled fusion; even two hundred years later, humanity, to commemorate his contributions to controlled fusion, selected him as the first person to be involved with the Trisolaran probe mission.

After stepping down, Lin Sen walked over to the vicinity of the four Wallfacers. Rey Diaz slumped in his seat, vacantly gazing, like a deflated ball.

Mr. Hines, on the other hand, watched Logic and Lin Sen with a wary expression, while Tyler's expression remained unchanged throughout.

"Mr. Logic, I've the utmost admiration for your plan. You also seem to have the most confidence in the doomsday battle I've ever seen. What is the source of your confidence?" Mr. Hines asked, not paying enough attention to Lin Sen but turning to Logic.

In fact, Mr. Hines was quite displeased with Logic, as the Mercury collision with the Sun plan articulated by Logic was feasible and should not have been disclosed so plainly.

Furthermore, Logic's analysis on escape added many more complications to his own last-minute escape plan, and most critically, his own plan seemed like a joke in front of Logic.

Logic did not speak but signaled for Lin Sen to respond.

Lin Sen replied, "Mr. Hines, no matter what, humanity must stake everything on one wager against the Trisolarans; we have no other choice.

In Huaxia mythology, the demon king Sun Wukong faced the entire celestial host with an even greater disparity in strength. All he had was an indomitable spirit; the only words he left behind were 'If I do not return from this war, so be it!'

Confidence is a choice, not an outcome; it doesn't need a source!

Even in failure, what makes humanity think it deserves to be immortal?"
