Chapter 29 Wu Yue Struggle and Mission_1

After the mobilization meeting, Lin Sen and Logic bid farewell to Chang Weisi. General Chang, the founder of the Space Force, was not part of the Wallfacer team. His attendance was more like escorting the Wallfacer plan.

After the meeting, Lin Sen went straight to Wu Yue and Zhang Beihai.

Wu Yue and Zhang Beihai were once partners, and their cooperation was successful, but successful cooperation doesn't equate to successful understanding.

Wu Yue believed in the supremacy of technology. He saw clearly that perhaps the moment the Trisolarans arrived, the civilization on Earth would come to an end. This was different from traditional understandings of war.

A Trisolaran civilization that was hundreds of years more advanced than humanity had no chance of being defeated; the outcome was bound to be a crushing one, or perhaps there need not even be a crushing. Like I come, I see, ...not I conquer, because there is no need.

Perhaps we think that the greatest disaster for a race is the extinction of the race itself, but not necessarily so; they still have a great chance of surviving. They can continue to exist in other forms, and may even create a glory more splendid than that of their ancestors.

As the Donghu were wiped out by the Xiongnu but the descendants of the Donghu established the Xianbei, from which the Sui and Tang Dynasties were built. In Tang times, we heard little of the Shiwei, who were always oppressed, but their descendants are well-known to all; they are the Mongolians who conquered Eurasia.

At the time of Trisolaris' arrival, no one could survive, including the ETO. There was no possibility for humanity to ever again shine, and its fate would stop right there.

There is no greater sorrow than a dead heart. Wu Yue's heart had died, but now his dead heart had sprung back to life. Perhaps mankind might not necessarily perish.

Wu Yue had always been enveloped in feelings of despair, unable to step out of his own thinking, just like most people of this era. They hadn't given much thought to anti-escape, and naturally, they were also unaware that ETO was behind the push against escape.

Even the highest elites of humanity, upon realizing that it was ETO pushing anti-escape, were unable to voice any kind of sentiment about fleeing. In this era, such voices were no different from ETO's. Perhaps only Wallfacers could do it, and maybe this was also a deeper layer of meaning behind the Wallfacer project. Everything said by Wallfacers couldn't be trusted, only Wallfacers could discuss escape.

Four years ago, at the work meeting of the Space Force, Wu Yue, who was criticized by Zhang Beihai as a defeatist, had already left the Space Force.

This time, he was brought over by Chang Weisi to join the Wallfacer project advisory group. What General Chang cherished was Wu Yue's incomparable talent, his extraordinary intelligence and judgment. The more exceptional a person was, perhaps the deeper their sense of despair.

Having watched the Wallfacer hearings throughout, Chang Weisi realized that Wallfacer might bring about a new change for Wu Yue, allowing him to recover.

In Chang's view, Wu Yue wasn't wrong, but his mental state was. It was rare to find such an excellent officer; his talent should not be quietly wasted away.

In the original timeline, Wu Yue was a defeatist. Everything about him was transparent, as if he were merely a stepping stone for Zhang Beihai.

Wu Yue was a colonel in the Space Force, born into a family of scholars. Both wise and melancholic, he looked upon the 'Tang'-class aircraft carrier under construction with despair in his eyes devoid of life. The grandiose and lofty carrier didn't seem like it was being built, but rather like something from an archaeological dig...

He yearned for hope, even placing hope in self-pity. He once said to Zhang Beihai, "Your father was the wisest admiral in the navy. If he were still here, maybe I wouldn't have fallen so deep."

It wasn't until Hines invented Thoughtcontrol that he went to the Belief Center, requesting Hines to imprint him with the "faith in God." His beliefs were entirely lost, and he placed his hopes on seeking serenity of the soul.

He didn't even think Thoughtcontrol could bring him a conviction of human victory; he would rather let himself believe in God, although he was brought up with materialist education and was a firm atheist.

His wife was a devout Christian, very calm about the future. In her words, "God has arranged everything, past and future. We, the children of the Lord, don't need to understand these arrangements. Just live quietly according to the Lord's will." This even made him envious.

His fate was clear, he was rejected by Hines. His entire life was spent in a contradiction between helplessness, fear, and a relentless dedication to his ideals, and no one could save him.

He was like a runner in an endless marathon, without direction, in complete darkness. He wanted to give up, but as someone who had always viewed humanity as a whole, he couldn't let go of his dedication to humanity.

He struggled in agony, sank in pain, and he also symbolized the helplessness and wandering felt by the people of that era when faced with the Trisolaran crisis.

On the other hand, Wu Yue was a genius in conventional warfare, worshipped technology, believed in the philosophy of technological victory, and was adept at studying human thought processes, which had much in common with the Trisolarans.

There were too many people like him in that era. Just give them a glimmer of hope, and the future might burst forth with endless brilliance. They were like souls groping alone in the dark, needing just a faint light to find their way forward.

As for Wu Yue's defeatism, as a Spirit Master, Lin Sen was very confident that he could clear the clouds in Wu Yue's heart in terms of his mental and emotional state.

At his core, Wu Yue was despairing only because he saw clearly the gap between Earth and Trisolaris, but now Lin Sen had shown him the future. Even the Trisolarans had things they feared, and he instantly became that all-capable warrior.

When Wu Yue saw Lin Sen approaching, he was the first to speak, "Mr. Lin Sen, I request to join the Deep Space Fleet, please approve."

Lin Sen replied, "Your future is not with the Deep Space Fleet. You haven't truly understood the essence of the Deep Space Fleet yet. You're a pure person, but there's no purity there.

You simply believe that you can dedicate everything to humanity, and that your dedication is meaningful and can compensate for what is missing. But these are your ideals. The Deep Space Fleet can have everything except for ideals.

In essence, the Deep Space Fleet that has departed no longer belongs to humanity. You don't have a clear understanding of this, and even in your heart, you still arrogantly dream of loyalty to humanity.

What the real Deep Space Fleet harbors is only hatred for humanity. They're like beings in an infernal hell, where in hell they can become anything, but the one thing they can't be anymore is human."

Wu Yue's eyes were blank, "Is this the future of the Deep Space Fleet? I seem to have never thought that the price would be so great! If that's the case, then why would they send us critical intelligence about the Trisolaran attack?"

Lin Sen continued, "They're like ghosts in an eternal hell, enduring a beginningless and endless prison alone, constantly enduring the fate of possible annihilation.

When all their beliefs are crushed, they hate us, and they hate the Trisolarans. Then they might have a certain chance to send us critical intelligence. For this slight probability, isn't it worth giving everything we can?

Besides, even if they don't send it, what impact does that have on us? The main purpose of the Deep Space Fleet is to find out the attitude of the Trisolarans towards escape and to preserve the seeds of humanity after human failure."

Wu Yue concluded, "I understand now. Maybe I'm really not suited for the Deep Space Fleet. I, who originally felt a void in my dedication, thought I had found a goal worth giving everything for, only to realize now how naive I was."

Lin Sen reassured him, "No, you have your own mission. Your talent needs to be used on the right path.

Your understanding of human nature is insufficient, but that's also your strength. You need to assist Marcus in his research on brain-machine interfaces, and perhaps even develop Mind Tactility. You need to fully utilize your talents.

In this era, not valuing one's talents is the real crime against humanity."

Every resonating and inspiring word struck Wu Yue's heart and made his eyes firm with a smile that had been missing for a long time, as he said, "I got it!"
