She forced herself to her feet, staring imploringly at the woman she had once called mother-in-law. "She is your granddaughter, for crying out loud! No matter how much you despise me, Sahara is your own blood. The blood that runs in your veins is the same as hers!"

Monique's voice cracked with raw anguish and pleading. Surely even Constance's black heart still harbored some shred of love and humanity for her own flesh and blood grandchild.

But Constance's expression remained utterly devoid of warmth as she regarded Monique coolly. "Blood means nothing to me, you foolish girl. Not when it comes to matters of retribution long overdue."

"Please, let her go..." Monique begged brokenly through her sobs. "Please, Constance..."
