"Uhghh hmmm"
I lazily woke up to the blistering summer heat all sweaty and disgusting even though there was air conditioning in the house. It's been a week since I've graduated Caldea elementary school, and I've been basking in the glory of graduating from that forsaken place. I have a couple of months of no homework and no learning stupid stuff like Pythagorean Theorem! I hopped off my bed and after I brushed my teeth and showered, I headed downstairs.
"Happy birthday Killian!" Both of my parents yelled happily.
"Congratulations on being 1 year closer to death." My sister Julia said in a rather monotone voice and a slight smirk. I was used to her saying stuff like that because Julia enjoys dark humor.
"..Thanks."
They had presents near the couches for me to open later and set up a much too large birthday cake in the middle of the dining room table. The birthday cake was around half the size of the kitchen fridge and was decorated with navy blue icing and black and white sprinkles. On the very top was lit candles that said 13.
"Dad, mom, isn't this a little too much cake for me? How are we even going to store this after we're done? Also why are we doing the cake part of the birthday so early?"
"We're just going to have to eat a lot so we can fit it in the fridge." My dad said while wearing a large smile and giving me a double thumbs up.
"Not possible" Julia said
"It's not like we're poor so we can afford giving you a large cake for your birthday. You forget that your dad is a project manager in the research department of the System Association? We also wanted to celebrate earlier in the day because you never know if you might acquire your system. You know it happens to everyone sometime between 13-14 years of age" My mom added while displaying a hint of worry.
"There are varying reactions from obtaining a system and we just want to be prepared just in case it happens later on during the day. Remember when your sister obtained her system? She nearly fainted and had a fever for 3 days!"
"Mom, the chances of me getting my system on the first day on my birthday is still quite low. I still have the rest of the year up until my next birthday to get a system. You worry too much!"
"But still..."
*Clap* My dad clapped his hands so loud it sounded like a whip going off.
"Alright that's enough with the serious stuff! Lets eat this cake before it starts to get old and taste like shit."
"Okay!"
After eating a lot of cake and joking around with each other. My dad looked at me and asked,
"So Killian, what section do you want to apply to in Neolith Academy? Research? System Officer? Student Development?"
"System officer!" I said immediately. I thought the research section was boring and with the student development section, it was very rare that people applied to that section because it was a section that focused most of their courses on teaching fundamentals to future students but most who became in charge of teaching students at the academies were retired system officers or research officers. Going to this section at a young age was seen as not useful as the chances of getting chosen to teach were very minimal at a young age. Several academies have proposed to completely remove the section all together with some of them already doing that.
"I see.... Just be aware that training to be a system officer may involve witnessing or seeing a lot of... horrible things. I'll support you but if you think that the system officer section is not for you, then don't be afraid to ask me to help switch you over to another section."
I understood why my dad was saying that. System officers are often very close to death. They often have to "deal" with people who use their systems to do heinous crimes such as murder, rape, torture, you name it.
"Honey, we don't even know if he's going to get a system that is suitable for the system officer section."
"Ah... that's right."
"*Sigh* Sometimes I wonder how you're a research department project manager..."
"Sorry babe, why do I need to use my brain at home when I have you to be my brain. I love you sooo much"
"...What are you even saying? *Sigh*" My mom blushed heavily when he said those words.
Julia and I watched them in disgust as they continued their cringey love dialogue until I had a sudden extreme pain in my head.
"Woah woah what the hell.... ACk!"
"Killian are you okay?! Dad! Mom! Killian might be getting his system!"
Dad and mom immediately stopped what they we're doing to check on me
"Killian!"
"AGHHHHHH!"
The pain was getting so bad. It felt like my brain was getting overloaded and it was going to explode. My nose starting to gush out blood and felt my body go weak. I looked at my arms and it was paler than a blank sheet of paper. Before I fell out of my chair, my mom caught me from falling out.
"This.... This is the worst reaction I've ever seen. We need to go to the hospital NOW" My dad quickly ran to his keys on the key hooks on the living room wall and then picked me up. He ran towards the car with my mom and sister running behind. I then passed out from the pain.

*Author's Note*
How was that for a first chapter? I'm scared because I'm not sure if the story is good enough or if the characters are appealing enough. ;~;
I don't really have a concrete plan for the personality of Killian but I do have some ideas. Right now, he's kind of a blank slate because I have something that's going to be a part in my plans soon that kind of "changes things."
I hope you've enjoyed the first chapter so far! If you didn't maybe right some ways, I can try my best to improve and make the story a more enjoyable experience for everybody!
