Between Monsters and Humans.

What would you do if the world ended today?

To be honest, I've never really given that question much consideration. Of course I would laugh, give a joke answer, maybe even throw in some heroic feats to make myself look cooler in a dumb way.

But this?

This is way worse than what anyone could ever imagine.

To my front, people were tearing each other apart. Those that attacked with the guise of humans, monsters in the flesh of those I knew. Loved ones, strangers, men and women alike, tearing away at those that tried to run away in terror. The sight was enough to make one puke, even animals wouldn't kill in such a horrific way.

Behind me ran those that managed to keep their sanity. Among those I told to run, my own family, at least those that remained, bolted for the door to get to some semblance of safety. Children held in their parents arms crying for anyone to save them, the adults cussing and screaming as they ran.

As for me. Well, I could already feel the venom from these monsters rushing through my veins. Each beat of my racing heart told me I would die from the bite on my arm. In my right hand I clutched a pistol from a fallen officer that was also caught in the chaos. In my left, a kitchen knife picked up along the way.

I knew my death was close, so I did the only natural thing I could. Was I scared? Absolutely, you could tell from the steaming stream leaking down my pants. Through all this, I stood my ground and got into position with a single thought racing through my head as I stood to defend the exit I told everyone to run through.

Why was I trying to be a hero?

I would be dead soon anyway, either the venom kills me or these monsters tear me to shreds.

Run.

I can't run. I've already committed.

It's not to late.

Fuck, my vision's getting fuzzy.

Do you even know how to fight?

The voice in my head kept bearing me down, driving me crazy with its ruthless thoughts. I couldn't ignore it, I could barely answer. This ongoing fight in my head pushed back and forth as the monsters finally took notice of me.

The screaming in the store seemed to quiet down. A signal that I was the only one left. Slowly, the monsters began walking towards me, like a pack of wolves surrounding their prey. Yet still, I stood.

Slowly, the smell of blood and piss filled my nostrils. Bringing my right arm up, I rested it on my left, pointing the barrel of the pistol and the blade at the mob. Bringing them close to my chest, I crouched down a little and got ready for my first, and last fight.

As if responding in kind, the monsters in the front got down on all fours, waiting for the right moment to pounce on me all at once. It was then that my mind went blank. Between the fear of death and the pride of protecting those that ran, only a single thought ran through my mind.

Fine, you wanna fight like monsters? Then I'll show you monster.

"COME ON!!!"

As the words bellowed from my throat, I lunged towards the mob of flesh wearing monsters. Howls and roars filled the building as the monsters rushed as well.

Of course, before I can tell the rest of what happened, it's probably best that I tell you how this all happened right?

Don't worry, I won't go back to far. Let's say...right, last week should do it.~
