Bayo's hand froze on the gate latch as Adeola's voice carried over the evening air. He turned, eyebrows rising at the sight of the Yoruba priestess standing on the sidewalk, a mysterious red box tucked under one arm.
"Ẹ kú àárọ̀, my sister," (Good morning, my sister) he greeted, his tone a mixture of surprise and caution. "I... wasn't expecting anyone."
Adeola's lips curved into a knowing smile. "I thought you might want some company after your big day." Her eyes, sharp as ever, scanned Bayo's face. "What trouble are you talking about?"
Bayo's jaw tightened, caught off guard by her perceptiveness. He opened his mouth to deflect, but the aroma wafting from the box Adeola held up stopped him short.
"I brought suya," she said, her eyes twinkling. She shifted, revealing bottles nestled under her other arm. "And something to wash it down with."
