I opened my eyes in the middle of the night. The room was dark and I was in my bed. How had I gotten there?
The last thing I remembered was hugging Kain as he celebrated my birthday with me.
My eyes suddenly widened. Someone was lying next to me!
As soon as I looked over, I met a pair of intense gray-blue eyes.
Kain was awake, watching me. My head rested on his arm like a pillow. Even through the darkness, I caught the light in his eyes.
“You are still here?” I whispered, even though I knew the answer.
Kain smirked, his eyes tender and soft. “You wouldn’t let me go. I had to lie down because some cute drunk pulled me right down into bed with her.”
“Oh….” My face was burning. I looked at my hands and realized that my fingers were still curled around his shirt, holding him in place.
My cheeks burned and I released his shirt.
As soon as I let go, the light in Kain’s eyes dimmed, and the disappointment on his face had my breath caught at my throat.
