Chap 13

Unaware of the Duke's pitying gaze, Adelin continued her contemplation.

'I need to hide as best as I can.'

With his memory recovery uncertain, she had to hide the Duke from the threat that had left him bloodied.

Adelin thought it best to keep the Duke as inconspicuous as possible.

'But is this man really my trump card?'

She chose the Duke to help her, but living together, she worried if she might have put herself in greater danger.

Is this okay?

Adelin lifted her head to look at the Duke. Her troubled eyes met his.

Without realizing, Adelin sighed. Her gaze and sigh only deepened the Duke's misunderstanding.

As Adelin walked silently towards the manor, lost in thought, the Duke, who had been watching her, tightly gripped her hand.

"I'm sorry for not having my memory, Del."

Caught in her thoughts, Adelin couldn't hide her surprise.

"What?"

"I'm sorry."

Confused by his sudden apology, she looked at him bewilderedly.

The Duke, interpreting her distress, thought he needed to regain his memory quickly for her.

"How did we live? Did we stay alone in that secluded mansion in the mountains?"

The Duke asked, hoping past stories might trigger his memory.

But for Adelin, who had no memories to share with him, it was an agonizing question.

"That… yes! It was just the two of us."

She couldn't deny it. It was not only to avoid the current moment but also a precaution in case his memory never returned.

Adelin simply affirmed his question, though her answer only deepened the Duke's misunderstanding.

"We must have relied on each other."

"Rely… Yes! It's just us living in these mountains, naturally."

"Indeed."

The Duke imagined how shocking it must have been for her, his lover, when he suddenly lost his memory.

He resolved to treat her well, grateful for her constant presence during his vulnerable state.

The idea of lovers who had only relied on and looked out for each other suddenly losing their memory one day was unimaginable to Cassis. It must have been a tremendous shock for her.

Yet, Adelin's assertion that they were essential to each other deeply moved Cassis.

The Duke's expression became increasingly somber, unable to hide his feelings of guilt.

'What did I say wrong?'

Adelin, unable to read the Duke's mind, was extremely perplexed.

Just as she was getting anxious about the Duke's darkening expression.

"Are you very upset because I've lost my memory?"

Ah, a misunderstanding.

Realizing the meaning behind the Duke's sudden words and expression, Adelin let out a relieved smile.

"I'm okay. Let's go home."

"I should try to find something when we get back home. It might help my memory return faster."

"Don't do that!"

Adelin, in a panic, raised her voice, then tried to defuse the awkward situation by reassuring the Duke.

"Don't force yourself to recall your memories. I'm worried it might harm you. I only care about your health."

Adelin had been anxious enough to visit a doctor, yet she didn't show it.

Despite how resentful he must feel about his memory loss, the Duke was deeply touched by her concern for his well-being.

"Understood. Even though I've lost my memory, I'm truly fortunate to have you."

"Me too. I'm really lucky to have you."

And with that, they both thought this was what a true romantic relationship was like.

The Duke's misunderstanding was only getting firmer.
