Woke Up (Part 9)

In the past, due to his health, he couldn't attend school.

Later, his inability to speak made it difficult to find stable work, so he had to tend to a few poorly yielding acres of dry land at home while doing some odd manual jobs.

Burdened with a debt that seemed impossible to repay and has to worry about his livelihood every day, Liang Hongyu couldn't bring herself to criticize the young man any further.

She looked back at the money box and sighed silently.

Aside from the need to repay debts, she was facing a very immediate and practical problem—

The household was out of food.

The last of their savings had just been used up.

Liang Hongyu handed the money box to Huo Tianzhou to put it back.

For now, they needed to address their immediate need for food.

The egg soup on the kitchen stove had gone cold, and Huo Tianzhou poured it back into the pot to reheat it.

Liang Hongyu, finding it too much trouble, so she simply ladled a bowl, drank it, and then went to the woodshed next door to fetch a basket.

As she came out, Huo Tianzhou approached, frowning when he saw what she was holding.

"I'm going up the mountain," Liang Hongyu said, "Don't forget to drink the rest of the egg soup."

It was on the mountain that Liang Hongyu had caught the cold.

Usually, everyone else avoided the place until they were fully recovered, but she, having just woken up, was eager to head back.

When she walked past with the basket, Huo Tianzhou reached out his hands and grabbed its edge.

"What are you doing?" Liang Hongyu turned his head to look at him.

Huo Tianzhou barely reached Liang Hongyu's chin.

He looked up at her, not wanting to argue, and tried to pull the basket back toward the woodshed.

After two steps, he hadn't moved it an inch.

Using both hands, Liang Hongyu still didn't budge.

Huo Tianzhou's face flushed slightly, but he didn't let go, he just stood there stubbornly.

Dragging it out any longer would mean they'd lose the whole morning.

Using a little bit of finesse, Liang Hongyu freed her basket from his grasp, "There's nothing to eat at home. If I don't go up the mountain to find something, we'll be left starving."

Liang Hongyu was determined to go, and Huo Tianzhou couldn't stop her.

With a stern face, he turned around and walked towards the fenced vegetable garden.

In the past few days, while Liang Hongyu was unconscious, he had been too busy taking care of her to tend the garden, and now the weeds were growing taller than the vegetables.

When his mother was still around, the vegetable garden was never overgrown.

The visitors always praised its neatness.

Huo Tianzhou lowered his eyes and pushed open the fence gate to go in.

...

Thinking about the lonely and desolate figure squatting in the vegetable garden, Liang Hongyu hesitated for a moment before stepping out.
