I'm here

The letter arrived just as I was finishing up my morning training with the new recruits. Their inexperience showed in their clumsy movements, but there was promise in some of them a spark of potential that, with enough discipline, would be honed into something formidable.

As I corrected one of the soldiers' stances, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a familiar figure approaching.

Myra.

She waved the letter in the air with an excited grin, dodging through the soldiers who scrambled to stand at attention as she passed.

I suppressed a smile. Myra's enthusiasm had a way of cutting through the seriousness that often hung over our duties, like a blade through fog. It was refreshing.

"What's that?" I called out, knowing full well what it was. Myra always delivered Lydia's letters personally, as if she were carrying the most precious cargo in all the realms.
