Milan's precinct had been an anemic husk of what it once was. The officers moved through their routines with a sense of futility, barely lifting their heads to acknowledge each other. Marino, perched on his desk, felt the shift more profoundly than anyone. Fresh out of the academy, he had been posted here just three weeks ago, and the disillusionment had hit him hard.
