"She confessed?" Nitin boomed with astonishment as his feet stopped in the hallway, prompting other students to stumble upon him and change their direction, while Karan stood like an accused person who had not yet accepted his crime.
Nitin was not expecting such an elevation in Karan and Triya's relationship, but he also could not deny what he had noticed the past few days.
"Is that why you've been visiting her place?" He questioned ahead, with a demanding tone and eyes, prompting Karan to hush his tone with careful words.
Karan feared if Nitin spoke any louder, the whole school would come under the knowledge of his relationship. So, he pulled him aside, about to explain when Nitin came up with another allegation.
"No, wait. Are you fucking each other?" Nitin was not wrong. He was just late. He was late because he did not assume Karan to be the person who would have sex with someone whom he does not even trust and would not tell him about it if it ever happened.
The silence had spread after his question, the clearest and truest response one could receive, which only astounded him even more.
His mouth fell wide as if he had seen a ghost and he pushed Karan to the wall, daring him to say it with his lips. "Why did you not tell me that you were fucking her?"
"Don't talk about her like that," Karan responded with a bitter tone, clearly expressing bitterness on his face as well, sparking the curiosity within Nitin about the connection Triya and Karan shared.
Karan had never expressed such an expression. It was the first time. He had never looked at Nitin that way.
Taken aback by Karan, Nitin released his arms and eased back, rubbing his forehead. "I'm sorry. I just didn't expect this from you." Karan kept listening to him. That's all he could do. Nitin wasn't saying anything wrong. Even he could not believe himself.
"Oh, my God!" Nitin continued, hustling to tone his pitch down, and added, "But wait, it also means that my assumption was right the whole time."
Karan simply nodded and watched him further add. "It was your first time, right? How was it?"
Nitin had many questions to ask, but before Karan could answer them, Triya appeared, reminding Karan of the feeling he had faced yesterday.
It was as if she was taking steps towards the history, taking him with her even without trying.
But, unlike him, she was poised and bold as well. She did not seem like anything or anyone was bothering her peace, which only decreased the peace within Karan.
He was in a haze, just watching her.
"What are you guys talking about?" Her feet halted before them, but her eyes were only on Nitin. The expression she was carrying wasn't her usual self. It was something else that one could not pinpoint at that very moment.
But Karan had noticed her expression, unaware of what it meant, and jumped to answer her, "Um, we were just talking- " but before he could finish his words, Nitin added, "We were talking about you."
Nitin did not seem to be fazed by her, unlike Karan, who was shocked by the audacity Nitin showcased. In Nitin's favor, Karan simply did not find it necessary to lie and wanted to answer truthfully, especially after Karan's peculiar behavior.
What harm could it bring? He was Karan's best friend, after all. He would only know the reason behind the change in Karan.
"I heard you asked him out on a date." Nitin continued, prompting the peculiar expression on her face to bitter.
"You told him!" Astonished, she altered her gaze from Nitin to Karan, adding, "We haven't even decided where to go yet?"
What was it that she was feeling? Both of them could not answer that, but they could feel it. It was more obvious than the chill in the air.
"Well, you can decide now," Nitin suggested with the same upbeat tone, affecting Triya even more, yet she brushed his suggestion off with a fake smile, and before walking away she whispered to Karan to meet her alone after the class, which did not sit well with Nitin.
Privacy is a valuable trait, but it looks questionable when done in front of a person who already knows about the secret.
"What did she say?" Nitin did not waste a second to question, pinning the weirdness in her behavior out, "Did you not think that was kind of weird?" But Karan found her behavior normal as usual.
"She's just different." He suggested. It was enough to quiet the uprising questions in Nitin's head but wasn't adequate to keep them buried. He just did not find it suitable to ask more questions about her.
Later that day, as asked, Karan left Nitin in the cafeteria and followed Triya into an empty classroom. The same classroom where he kissed her.
She had just signaled him to follow her and was quiet the whole time, which followed her into the classroom until she pushed him against the same wall once again.
As usual, Karan was dumbfounded, even though he was trying to get normal with her demeanor. It was just not easy to ever know what was going on in her head and be okay with whatever was going in her head.
"Why did you tell him about the date?" She quickly questioned with dark eyes, her tone a mix of bitterness yet serenity.
He knew something was wrong and at that point, he assumed he had made a mistake by telling his best friend about what was going on in his life.
"I'm sorry! I just wanted to share the good news with him." He quickly apologized, altering his fluttering eyes away from her.
He seemed afraid, holding onto his bag strings tightly as well as his breath, which made her take a heavy breath and poise herself back into normality.
"It's not that. You can share whatever you want with him, but you should have asked me first." She was gritting her teeth through the whole sentence, fisting her hands to drink the instability within her.
