Guangyuan City, the fighter jet landed.
Luo Yu and his group of seven descended from the plane, where soldiers responsible for defending the city had already been waiting for their arrival.
"You must be the talented students from Chuan Province Martial University."
The waiting soldier was a crew-cut tough guy who usually didn't crack a smile, but when facing everyone, he forced a slight smile, trying his best to come across as friendly.
Kong Wu seemed to be quite familiar with such situations and stretched out his hand without hesitation.
"Hello, 'talented student' is too much praise; I'm the captain of this squad, Kong Wu."
"Thank you for coming to Guangyuan City to assist us. The ferocious beast's sudden onset this time is quite daunting, and we are relying on everyone's additional support." The tough guy seemed to be quite uncomfortable with such pleasantries, but he was well aware that those from Chuan Province Martial University were indeed capable geniuses.
If they were willing to put in more effort, perhaps fewer soldiers on the city walls would fall, which was the outcome he most wished to see.
"The situation is critical, so let's not stand on ceremony," Kong Wu shook his head, noticing the soldier's discomfort. Moreover, he personally preferred a more straightforward approach.
"Alright, alright, please follow me." The crew-cut tough guy nodded, leading the way, and soon they arrived atop a towering city wall forged from titanium alloy.
The dazzling array of laser guns was already fully charged and primed, with soldiers standing guard around them, their eyes sharp and focused on the distance, ready to respond to any command.
The monk in the group turned his head and said to the one behind him: "Xia Xiaozi, take a good look and learn, since you're just a freshman, this must be your first chance to visit such a military stronghold, right? The defensive installations on this wall should be quite an eye-opener for you."
Luo Yu nodded without offering any explanations.
After all, the other person meant no harm, at most just showing off the airs of an older classmate. People tend to get like that with age, he understood.
He was just curious as to how big of a lapse in judgment the other person had, to shave his head and then sear nine uneven scars with a cigarette butt into it.
That's just straight-up foolishness.
He thought as much, but he didn't say it out loud; that would have amounted to infighting in front of the enemy, looking for trouble.
"Tch, you sure are playing it cool, kid," the monk retorted with a smile, seeing Luo Yu's simple nod and not taking any offense, playfully ribbing him.
The pale-faced Old Ghost laughed, "Come on, Monk, stop teasing the freshman. It's normal for them to be nervous and quiet on their first visit to such an important military location."
The monk glared, "What do you know, you pretender? I'm just trying to chat with my junior brother to help him relax a bit."
"We're not nervous at all," retorted Cheng Jinjin, pouting a bit defiantly.
Initially, he had been quite afraid, but then he remembered the impressive prowess of his boss, and that made him less nervous.
"I used to be just as stubborn as you when I was your age."
"Hahaha, it's too early to tell now. Wait until the ferocious beasts attack; you two will understand the extent of the bloodshed. Just don't turn into deserters then," the Monk laughed loudly.
"Alright, let's get serious, no more jokes, we're not here to have fun," Captain Kong Wu quickly admonished with gravity.
"Boss, when the ferocious beasts really start their assault, we should keep these two freshmen away from us. It'd be too dangerous for them to be close," the woman with serpentine pupils suggested, looking back at the seemingly unremarkable Luo Yu and Cheng Jinjin.
Kong Wu considered it for a moment and then said to an officer nearby: "Excuse me, these two are my freshmen, with shallow cultivation levels, and it might be dangerous for them to follow us. We will handle the main work; please help them find a less dangerous position."
"I don't have the authority to decide on that; you can discuss it with the City Lord when you meet him. We'll be there shortly," responded the officer.
"Boss, it seems we have been thoroughly underestimated," Little Fatty muttered somewhat vexedly, in a hushed tone.
Luo Yu simply smiled and said, "It's not a loss, and after all, they mean well."
"Boss, I'm impressed by your temperament," Little Fatty gave a thumbs up.
He estimated that the entire squad probably wouldn't stand a chance against their leader.
Yet the boss didn't assert himself over them and remained low-profile throughout, which made Cheng Jinjin reflect deeply. Was this the so-called grandeur that legends speak of?
However, recalling the boss's feat of crippling Third Grade Xue Can and standing up to First Grade Chairman Qin, that didn't seem like someone who would keep a low profile.
Upon reaching the city wall, the support team from Chuan Province Martial University finally met the City Lord.
Qian Han, Second Rank Middle Stage, a cold-faced middle-aged man with a metal battle saber at his waist, concealed his strength well, keeping it under wraps.
"City Lord, I've brought the people," reported the tough guy, saluting.
"Good, you may step down now," Qian Han nodded, and then turned his gaze to Kong Wu and the others: "Guangyuan City thanks you for your support."
Kong Wu, neither overly humble nor arrogant, clasped his hands together: "I'd like to know how long until the beast tide attacks."
Luo Yu and the others stood on the city wall dozens of meters high and surveyed the landscape which stretched out in the distance, but there was no sign of the ferocious beasts.
Qian Han said, "The ferocious beasts are currently gathering 130 li away and could attack at any moment."
Before Kong Wu could ask more, Qian Han continued: "According to our scouts, the strongest in the nearest group of ferocious beasts is a Second Rank Leopard Scale Beast. The Third Grade ferocious beasts are of various species, totaling eleven, and there are one hundred and twenty-two Fourth Grade beasts. The number below Fourth Grade is still increasing, currently exceeding a thousand."
Luo Yu thought to himself that the City Lord was indeed competent, having scouted the enemy's movements in advance before their arrival, and was prepared.
"If there's only one at Second Rank, that's manageable," Kong Wu breathed a sigh of relief, aware that within the city, only the City Lord was at Second Rank.
After all, Guangyuan City wasn't such a big city, and the First Grade experts of Great Xia were scarce, so it would be wasteful to assign a First-Grade Expert to secure such a small city.
