Chapter 73: Battle in the Rain

As we quickly emerged onto the main street to the left of the courtyard, the opened doors of the inner defenses loomed. An extended procession of townspeople stretched beyond the walls, their faces knit with despair. The commanding soldiers raised their voices, attempting to restore order.

"Form straight lines! No pushing! Enter one by one!"

Nevertheless, their orders went unheeded.

People clamored and jostled, attempting to simultaneously enter the gates.

"How irksome."

I frowned, then firmly pushed my way through from the side of the gate.

"Oh no!"

An old lady was pushed and stumbled, losing her balance.

Ignoring her predicament, I pressed onward, carving a path against the tide of refugees.

"I'll make a way. Take cues from me!"

"Yes!"

The response echoed from a distance.

After successfully penetrating the inner defenses, we wasted no time and advanced directly towards the outer gate. The faces of the countless people we passed by were etched with despair, and among them, several trembling fighters crouched towards the sides of the alleys.

"This feels strange," Eolka mumbled.

"Don't worry, you'll get used to it. Later on, you'll find it boring," I reassured.

Before long, the city wall and the gate loomed. Adjacent to the gate, a large winch responsible for its opening and closing loomed before us.

"Jenna, climb up the wall and survey what is going on outside."

"Roger!"

"Aaron, get ready to work the winch."

"Yes, sir!"

"Eolka, your role is casting. When the gate opens, unleash a second-level fire spell outside."

"You mean a grand burst, right? Understood."

"So, he's also here," Shurn stared at me with a firm gaze, silently observing.

Jenna, who had been keeping watch from atop the wall, yelled, "Brother, there are trolls gathered outside the gate. It seems like they'll flood in all at once when the gate opens."

"I expected as much. Get back immediately!"

"Affirmative!"

"Aaron, start turning the winch."

Aaron moved towards the winch and pulled the rope.

Squeak, squeak.

Gradually, the gate began to open, swinging from one side to another.

One of the soldiers standing guard on the wall shouted, "What's going on? Damn it! The gate is opening!"

"What? Have the trolls breached the defenses?"

"No! It's opening on its own! It's moving on its own!"

"What? Stop it immediately!"

The officers on the wall hastily moved towards the steps.

"Keep them from descending!"

"Got it!"

Jenna tripped the soldier attempting to slide down the steps.

"Ouch!"

"Ahhh!"

The soldiers stumbled and entangled, forming a turbulent mass on the ground. Some wore expressions of despair, while others collapsed towards the edges of alleys, trembling with fear.

A man clad in magnificent armor, bearing the demeanor of an officer, unleashed his wrath.

"What is this madness? Are these evil spirits preying on us? Stop them! Defend at all costs, even if it means sacrificing your lives!"

"Kiiii, kiiiiii!"

The calls of trolls seeped through the cracks of the gate, adding to the tension.

"Eolka!"

"I'm on it!"

"La Gran Integio."

Eolka closed her eyes and began chanting a spell.

Flames surrounded Eolka, emanating from her very feet.

Ping!

A crossbow emerged from the gap in the gate, and a bolt was shot towards Eolka.

I caught the bolt with my bare hand and sent it back, deflecting its trajectory.

"Jenna, stop the warriors advancing!"

I swiftly moved towards a warrior charging forward with a winch, striking him in the abdomen.

"A phantom, is it a ghost? Where could you, you fiend, be? I won't let you have your way!"

Another warrior, fueled by anger, swung his sword.

I dodged the attack, evading the blade effortlessly. Seizing the opportunity, I delivered a solid blow to the back of his head with my shield, rendering him unconscious.

"Is the goddess forsaking us?"

In that crucial moment, just as the officer was about to leap forward

"Hiyap!"

Jenna struck the back of the officer's neck with force.

The officer collapsed, joining the ranks of the fallen warriors.

"Kyarr, kyara la!"

Outside the gate, many pairs of ruby eyes glinted malevolently.

With each turn of the winch by Aaron, their eyes gleamed even brighter, as if fueled by anticipation.

"At last, raindrops began to fall from the sky, gently and instantly.

"Your flames won't be quenched by mere rain, will they?"

Eolka didn't respond directly, but a smile twisted on his face, revealing his unwavering confidence.

"And then..."

The gate swung open wide, revealing the path forward.

At that moment, many trolls surged forward as one.

"Blow them away!"

"Ignite!"

A fire with a diameter of several meters erupted, engulfing the trolls.

"Eeek!"

"Don't destroy the gate. Let the blast happen outside!"

The flames surged out like a living entity, engulfing the area beyond the gate.

All that remained afterward were charred troll carcasses.

"Engulf!"

Crack! Crack! Boom!

"Kyaaaaaaaaa!"

A powerful blast swept over, causing the terrified screams of trolls to echo outside the gate. The bodies of those directly hit by the blast soared several meters high over the wall. Aaron, standing nearby, murmured.

"Every time I see it, I can't help but be amazed. Sorcery's power is truly incredible."

Near the gate, a blazing inferno raged, unfazed by the escalating rainfall.

"We can reflect later. The battle begins now."

"Indeed, you're right."

Outside, many trolls were likely preparing for a horrifying encounter.

"Jenna, Aaron!"

"We're ready! We'll go first!"

Jenna drew her dagger and leaped outside, into the flickering flames. Aaron tightly gripped his lance and followed Jenna's lead.

Eolka took a deep breath.

"Huuu."

"We still have far to go. Can you handle it?"

"I can. Don't underestimate me!"

Eolka retrieved a mana elixir from within her garments and took a sip.

"I can unleash 100 more shots!"

"Good. Go for it."

Eolka also vanished past the gate.

What remained was me and the young man who had been observing us from the corner.

"Do you intend to follow?"

I pointed to the raging flames outside the gate.

"[Shurn () feels fear! All credits reduced by 30%.]"

Shurn couldn't utter a word; he trembled uncontrollably.

I chuckled and spoke.

"Go to Edis. She'll guide you. If you survive after this battle, I'll take care of you."

"Oh, I get it! I undeeerstaaand!"

Shurn shouted and quickly retreated.

"Kiyaaaah!"

Outside, the cries of the trolls echoed through the air.

"I'll kill all of you."

I grinned, spun my sword, and hurled myself fully into the fiery depths.
