A human fighter, his lower body missing, hauled his upper half using his two arms frantically.
A troll with twisted bones lurched to his feet.
A monster, transformed into a hedgehog with bolts, wriggled as it moved in a puddle.
"Aaargh!"
One of the troopers on the plain shouted in dread and took off.
However, hands rose up from the ground underneath and snatched him. The bodies began to gobble up the fighter's insides.
Crunch, aargh, swallow.
The fighters among the cadavers became prey without the option to resist.
A large number of bloody bodies lying on the plain rose together.
Their limbs hung, guts spilled, emitting unpleasant groans.
Eolkas' coloring turned pale as she watched them.
Before the message of dread came up.
Thwack!
I struck the nearby rock loudly with my shield.
Refocus for the time being and return to the city for reassembly.
"Hyung-nim, what on earth are those?"
"Parasite sprites carrying udon noodles instead of minds."
I crushed the head of an oncoming human cadaver with my shield.
The creature fell face down into the puddle, silent.
"Don't hold back. Crush their heads."
Not a single one of them responded.
Dread was evident on their faces.
I grabbed Aaron by the collar and lifted him up, then shook him vigorously.
"Will you return with me, or become those mongrels' prey?"
"Those beasts."
"Aaron!"
Surprised, Aaron woke up and tightly held his lance.
"I'll return with you."
"Good. I'll carry Eolka. Run for the city gate!"
"Understood!"
After lifting Eolka, I ran straight ahead. Aaron, holding a lance, followed on the left, while Jenna, with a knife, stuck to the right.
"They are slow. Don't engage with them individually. Stick to the city wall!"
Aaron pierced the head of a whining troll carcass before the wall with his lance.
A great many violent cadavers slowly approached the city wall.
Living carcasses.
Beasts revived from the dead under unambiguous circumstances.
Though they lose much of their pre-death abilities and physical capacities, their appetite for flesh increases strangely. They will continue to act as long as their heads remain intact.
The beasts that could appear on the tenth floor of the tower were by no means ordinary.
The difficulty was extraordinary.
"Ugh! Close the door! Close it!"
At the urging of the officer inside the gate, the fighters turned the lever, sweating profusely. The door gradually narrowed.
"Jenna!"
Jenna took out a bolt and aimed it at the lever.
The bolt pierced the warrior's forearm who was turning the lever, and he grasped his arm in pain.
The officer, who was shouting in agony, took over the lever.
"Aaron!"
Aaron rushed to the door and wedged the iron bars into the gap.
He braced himself against the twisting bars.
"Why won't it lock! What's going on?!"
The officer screamed, abandoning the lever and kicking the hallway.
I pushed Eolka through the gap in the door. The two followed inside. Aaron, holding the lever inside the door, said:
"Come in!"
"I'm not going. Close the door."
"What?"
"Go inside the ghetto. Join Edis and safeguard the sculpture of the goddess. If you lock the door, you can wait."
"Oppa, why aren't you coming in!"
"The cadavers are closing in from behind."
There was no time to figure it out.
"Do I seem like easy prey?"
"Yet, outside—"
"Believe me."
Jenna said firmly.
"You'll return, right?"
I smiled and said:
"Are words not enough?"
"I get it. I'll close it!"
"Hyung-nim is still outside!"
"He must have a plan! Trust him, as usual."
Aaron's spear was retrieved, and the door began to close.
Not long before the door shut, Eolka whispered:
"Don't die, please."
"Likewise."
"Uooooh."
I moved away from the door.
Thud!
The monstrosity's iron mace struck the door powerfully.
The door shook momentarily but didn't collapse.
Pound, pound, pound!
The beast continued to beat the door with the iron mace. Wood splinters fell to the ground. They lacked the knowledge to use ladders, so we could possibly hold them off for a while with the door.
"Uuugh."
An officer's carcass pierced the door. After blocking it with a shield, I decapitated it.
Near it was a troll. As the executions went on multiple times, the severed necks of the cadavers spilled foul blood as they fell.
I pressed my shoulder against the city wall and jumped sideways.
These creatures move according to two main principles: the first being the destruction of the goddess sculpture, and the second being their craving for the living. Therefore, among the thousands of carcasses, only a few dozen followed me, while the majority clung to the door.
Suddenly, I heard a shout.
"Aaargh!"
A soldier who was climbing the ladder must have slipped and fallen down.
Unfortunate, luck wasn't on his side.
It's easier to deal with those standing than the ones running around; therefore, the pursuing bodies headed for the shouting soldier with their limbs contorted.
Crunch. Bite.
As I continued to run, I heard the sound of flesh being chewed and bones being crushed.
However, I couldn't do anything for him. After all, he was already as good as dead.
I moved to a position where I wouldn't get surrounded and smashed the heads of the approaching creatures.
I looked at the burning forest.
My target was within it.
The Dark Cleric.
They always appear on the middle floors.
Their level isn't high, and their combat power isn't exceptional, but they have one special ability that makes them a real nuisance for aces. It's the Revival of Lions. They can raise the cadavers around them and turn them into zombies.
The stronger they were in their past life, and the more bodies around, the more troublesome they become.
In missions like this, they can be really a problem.
But there's also a strategy to deal with them.
If I had to face thousands of bodies alone, I'd be buried in bones here.
I'll go down if I deal with the spellcaster.
I considered bringing Jenna along but ultimately decided to go alone.
There are also carcasses inside the city.
I looked up at the city wall. Edis was piercing the forehead of one of them with her blade. Two groups were lined up next to her, clearing away the carcasses one by one.
My eyes met with Dicas.
"Hyung-nim."
"Stay strong!"
Dicas nodded firmly.
There's no sign of fear.
Nobody had died.
Even in this situation, they were demonstrating their combat prowess.
Edis's leadership seemed better than I had expected. With the other three joining her, they would do well even without me.
I knocked down the creatures blocking my way and moved forward. The target was not far away.
"Hee-heeng!"
A lost horse. Cadavers were gathering around it. I jumped and broke the back of one of them. As I swung my blade in a crescent, five upper
and lower bodies were cut diagonally.
Once the surrounding was cleared, the horse immediately tried to flee.
I quickly approached, grabbed the reins, and mounted it. The horse kicked, trying to dislodge me. I tapped its neck and said:
"Don't worry. You're safe with me."
Eventually, the horse became calm.
I kicked its flank, and the steed started to accelerate.
To reach the forest, I had to break through thousands of cadavers. I needed the ability to penetrate.
Luckily, the cavalry's horses were well-bred warhorses, large in size, and thoroughly trained. The primary requirement for warhorses is not feeling fear even before spear blades.
The horse, gaining enough momentum, plowed through the cadavers as it moved forward.
Of course, there were obstacles to avoid as well.
I quickly turned the reins to the left, and the horse's head turned. The monster's iron mace just missed us. From behind, body wolves that had risen late rushed towards us.
One of the wolves, about to bite the horse's hindquarters, took an arrow in the head and fell over.
Looking back, I saw Jenna aiming her bow from afar on the city wall. Every time she pulled the bowstring, a wolf toppled over.
"That crazy girl."
