A cold dread settled over me as I stared at the note. It gnawed at the edges of my contentment, a discordant note in the symphony of the day. Pacing back and forth, I tried to identify the source of the message, the motive behind the cryptic warning.

Logic dictated there was no reason to doubt Damian. Every interaction had been positive, filled with warmth and genuine kindness. Yet, the seed of doubt had been sown, taking root in the fertile ground of my unease.

Suddenly, the door creaked open, revealing Mira. "Can't sleep?" she inquired, concern etched on her face.

"Yes," I blurted, caught off guard. "I'm… tired." The word tasted ashy on my tongue, a poor excuse even to my own ears.

Mira's brow furrowed. "Understandable," she murmured, her voice laced with sympathy. "Perhaps some fresh air would help clear your head?"
