The silence of the house pressed in on me after dinner. Sleep, despite the exhaustion of the day, remained stubbornly out of reach. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a tangled mess of emotions keeping it captive. Slipping out of my room, I drifted towards the kitchen, the familiar comfort of a cool glass of milk beckoning me.
Rounding the corner, I nearly bumped into Samuel and Lina, their hushed conversation punctuated by bursts of laughter.
"Oh!" I exclaimed, startling them both. "What's so funny?" A teasing lilt colored my voice, momentarily pushing aside the unease gnawing at me.
Samuel's eyes widened in surprise. "Annie? What are you doing up? You had a long journey. Shouldn't you be resting ?"
I couldn't help but return the playful jab. "What about you, Alpha Samuel? Why are you both sneaking around the kitchen in the middle of the night?"
